Let's say a college student dies and the killer took over his identity.

1. Would a job that you're applying for call to get college records?

2. Does the college mark the records as deceased?

3. What if the dead student had no family and no one reported his death to the college? Would his identity be even easier to steal?

I've been out of college for a long time, but I recently needed a transcript for a job (which I ended up not taking). All I did was call and give them my Social Security number, the year I graduated, the (pre-marriage) name I was using when I graduated and a credit card number for the fee. The transcript came in about a week. No one questioned who I was or particularly cared. They just processed the request. This was an Ivy League school. State schools may handle things differently.

Some will and some won't. It depends on the job, how long the student has been out of school and how gung-ho the HR person is.

2. Does the college mark the records as deceased?

As far as I know, no. That would require them tracking every student for life, which is a little unrealistic.

3. What if the dead student had no family and no one reported his death to the college? Would his identity be even easier to steal?

Yup.

Yes, student records/transcripts will be emended with "deceased" if a college has reliable information -- like a death certificate that's submitted because of an identity theft issue, the student is marked deceased, or if the student is killed while enrolled, or if they have other data. This is increasingly the case as alumni associations get ever more sophisticated about targeting alums for donations.

On my campus, you have to provide permission for anyone else to view your records.
