Problems with rhyming

When I write a poem I would like to learn how too (excuse layman terms) put more space between the words I use that rhyme.
This is an excerpt from 2 Leonard Cohen songs that is sort of an example of what Im saying.
"The last time I saw you,you looked so much older your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder"
Or like this....
"Now the flames they followed Joan of Arc as she went riding through the dark no moon to keep her armour bright,no man to get her through this very cold and lonesome night."

I find when I try to do this it end up sounding like this "the cat in a hat sat on a mat and darn it he was flat....and on and on.

I guess Im wondering if there are any books or excercises I could do to help this problem?

I see them Jacob--maybe you need to clear your cookies and sign back in?
there's one here in the Chapbook, and I saw one in critique (that's as fas as I looked)-maybe you're looking in the wrong places. I've never ever seen a poem just deleted by the mods here. It's highly unlikely that would happen, and if it did, there would be an accompanying explanation.

Hi Jacob,

This might sound silly and, for sure, I'm probably not the one to give advice on writing poetry but, try and write without consciously trying to rhyme. Just let whatever wants to come out and then, if you feel you need to make it rhyme, work with what you've got. My preference is to write free form and I know that probably aggravates all the people that are very concerned about form and function. For me, it's about "feeling out" the poem. For good or bad, that's how I do it.

I have no books on the topic but I do understand where you're coming from -

I thought Scarletpeaches and I were the only ones who still enjoyed rhyming poetry.

That said, when I have that feeling of "too much" rhyming, I leave the word in place and finish the stanza (or strophe (yada) ) then go back and try to fill in more lines between what rhymes.

I hate saying poetry out loud to myself but sometimes that's what you have to do. Eventually, you can train your mental ear to hear it and thus save yourself the further embarrassment of talking to yourself out loud. (where people might hear you and pronounce you certifiable.)
