I thought John Henry was a mythic America folk hero, some kind of steel driver or something.

The horse was named after the folk hero. He got his name when one owner happened to be there when John decided his steel trough was possessed by Satan and had to be destroyed. He pounded it to death with his hooves and then threw it at people passing by. That was when his owner decided he needed a steel driving name.

The Angel of Death made a try at him five years ago but he kicked the Angel away. This time he was just too old and frail.
