After seeing several posts for awhile now I gather most people write on their computer.

What I want to know is how many actually write with pen and paper.

Becuse really if you only use the computer your not a writer your a typer:D

I will start the count.

1=paper

I tried a piece of slate and a rock but the postage on submissions was murder. :)

Actually, I might as well use a slate 'cause I'm not getting any work done anyway. :(

Mixed media for me, tyvm. I use both handwriting and computer, depending on my mood and when I want to get out of the apartment for a while. Mixed media applies to worldbuilding, outlining, writing, and revising. It just depends.

Then again, I'm just weird.

Broken laptop. I think the screen's going to fall off at any minute.

Usually I write longhand and then type, but sometimes I write straight on the laptop. Depends on if I'm at home or not.

Rubbish! The tool is not the art. Is someone who uses a typewriter rather than pen and paper also a "typer"? If so, then I suppose Hemingway, for one, was no writer.

For the record, I can only do my brainstorming and outlining with pen or pencil in 6 x 8 inch spiral bound notebooks. I can only do my writing with a computer. Used to be I could only do the writing with a typewriter, but then technology changed and one of the greatest tools ever known to writers - the Delete key - was invented.

And, to be pedantic, it's you're, not your, in the quoted sentence above. A real writer should know how to spell.

Without a PC I'd be back at un-edited manuscripts sititng in a box in the closet until someone else came up with my novel ideas. Lol- I was waiting for my kids to grow up so I could afford to pay someone to edit them and type them out- In Sci fi, you can't put anything aside for five or ten years, because it's already a reality.

OK, everybody, take a chill pill. I am quite certain that was a JOKE.

More and more, I'm taking to paper. It just seems to be working for me better right now. But like Gerri and Shady, it depends. I've done a lot straight into a computer/lap top.

I use pen and paper for the most part. Sometimes I will use the computer, but my creativity does not seem to flow as well, but that's just me. I did make the mistake on my first novel to wait till I finished it to start typing. That will never happen again. I thought I'd commit suicide before I finished getting it all on the computer. Now I write around 25 - 50 pages then type them.

Always the pen and paper for first drafts. After that, it's on the computer. Tried doing first drafts of computer but it was much easier to hit the 'Delete' button than to cross out lines or use white-out. :tongue

It is. Nice on a mild day to take the laptop out onto the porch and write there.

Mostly, though, I write here at my desk, on the desktop PC -- with a view of the porch and garden.

I write on an Apple Powerbook. Don't think I'd get anything accomplished writing longhand. Even any development I do before writing is on the laptop.

I use computer most of the time, mainly coz I'm a tech geek and it's freaking easier. I work with computers at work and so can type pretty quick, and also, I can try to write (or mostly blog) from work.

However, when I'm in a rut, I like to have a go using paper with my fake fountain pen. In refreshes your state of mind and allows you to write freely. I'll do that for a couple of pages before going back to the computer.

I just started on my ninth book today and went from paper notes and a paper outline I drew out some time ago. So far the story has changed since then but I am doing the adaptations on the computer because it's so much easier. :)

Between the lines
I engrave my words on clay tablets.

Okay, I write on a computer. I do so easily and happily. My handwriting is illegible (even to me), and typewriters are from the Dark Ages.

Of course, there's always papyrus...

Notes, ideas, good lines, first drafts and first corrections/edits in longhand, pen to paper. All things subsequent are done on a Mac (Apple) PowerBook.

:)
