Navigating Canadian Publishing

I know most Canadian publishers will work with Canadian writers only, so you're in luck!

You asked about Orca. My first book (YA novel) has just been published by Orca this fall.

Everyone there has been wonderful to work with and I have learned tons from my editor. I live in Victoria so have the added pleasure of having been able to meet the folks there in person. They are all so enthusiastic, helpful and supportive of my writing-- it's been a great experience. I was very happy with the editing process and cover design, and they promote their books well in Canada and the US.

I have several other books under contract with them-- I'm in the middle of editing one right now-- and I would recommend them very highly. Their submission guidelines are on the website and are very specific and clear. If you have something that fits, I'd definitely suggest sending it to them.

This is good advice for any writer, whether submitting to a Canadian publisher, an American publisher, a British publisher, well you get the idea.

brittanimae, there are some truly wonderful Canadian publishers of children's book who have been around for years and have excellent reputations both in Canada and around the world. I'd start with them.

You've already received lots of great information but I thought I'd add to it in case you're still looking ...

The current issue of Writer's Market has a full section on "Canadian and International Book Publishers". If you don't purchase this each year, just go to your local library and they will have the current issue in the reference section -- but you can't sign the current year issue out (you'll have to research in the library).

I'm also quite certain that Writer's Market also produces a Canadian Writer's Market (which is likely in the library as well).

As you're from Saskatchewan I thought I'd tell you about a small literary press in Saskatoon - Thistledown Press. Their submission guidelines are online. If you want any more details about what to expect from them just PM me. They published my medieval novel in 2005.
