Anyone else watch this?

I'm completely addicted. I love watching these folks lose weight...it's completely amazing to me.

My wife watched it last year. and this year, because all the television I watch is with her, I'm watching it. And, oddly enough, I'm enjoying it. Although they get a leeeeeeettle over dramatic sometimes.

(and, when they talk, you can sometimes see exactly WHY they wound up weighing eleven billion pounds...)

Yup. I don't usually go for reality tv, but this sucked me in. And I never want anyone to be eliminated; I want them all to stay there on campus until they reach their goal weights.

I'm watching for the same reasons PD.

Every time I've seen it, I just want to chow down on some cakes an pies.

You're so vain...I betcha think this thread was about you.

I can't watch. I eat a ten course meal and I lose weight. Watching that show, I'd probably shed mercy weight!

Hey Kristie, any of the contestants take ali™?

(I bet you'd thought I'd forgotten about you and your fascination with oily anal discharge, but I haven't. And I never will. Bwa-ha-haaaaaa!)

Ironically, we usually watch the show while we're eating dinner.

I'm sympathetic to a point, with some of them.

Of course, I have no right to say anything. I'm 5' 10", I weigh 125 pounds, I have a minuscule amount of body fat, and I exercise vigorously every day.

But may I just say...

trainer Kim? hot.

My wife and I watch.

I made the observation last night that the show may actually work negatively on the folks who are watching it and trying to lose weight. If you see how hard those people are working, and then the scale shows 2 lbs. lost for some of them -- that's tough. Makes you think, "Man, I'll never lose weight if they're working this hard and only losing two."

My wife disagreed. She said that a person sitting at home thinks, "I know I'm not going to have to work this hard to lose weight." And so they go out, do a little bit of walking, watch what they eat, and begin to lose without all the sweating and passing out and stuff.

From a writerly standpoint*, it's an interesting character study, an interesting look at people's personalities.

(*But I hate "from a writerly standpoint." Just look at things and feel and experience them as a human being. The parts of you which are a writer are deeper and wiser and will remember what is needed out of the experience anyway.)

For whatever reason, the show's presence in my week has sort of bolstered my exercise routine. I used to work out in the mornings just to clear my head and get ready for my day**. Now, I'm actually pushing myself a little harder, just because I can.

(**And because I'm a full-time writer with very little reason to leave the house, exercise is a good idea, or I'm going to have a heart attack by the time I'm forty.)

That's the one issue I have with this show. I think they should measure progress- at least in the beginning- by body fat percentages or lean muscle mass, instead of by weight.

They are getting so disheartened about only losing a couple of pounds, but why hasn't anyone reminded them how much muscle they are putting on and how much more dense it is than fat? Many of them are working out for the first time in their lives; they're gonna gain muscle weight, and the scales are going to reflect that.

But I guess a body fat test wouldn't have the drama of the "weigh in." (unless they did the one where they float you in the pool)

Rachel,

It wasn't an issue last night, when they all lost umpty umpty pounds, but the week before last, my wife and I were exasperatedly talking about that very thing. And while I'm all in favor of good television (if, in the end, we can call reality TV "good"), I do hope that people who pull their inspiration from that show have the sense to do research and not just rely on dropping body weight and nothing else.

This is what my wife says, but I don't know. (I admit I'm not an expert on this stuff; far from it.)

I lost 16 or 17 pounds early in the summer, and I was lifting weights pretty hard. First time I'd lifted since high school. Yet the pounds began to fall off. Three a week, four, five -- and I wasn't doing nearly as much cardio as these people are doing.

Maybe each body is different, but I'm still amazed that some of them aren't losing more weight.

What's interesting to me are the bodies of the Twins on the black team, and that big guy on the Red team (hey, how's that for vague! I don't know their names. The Team Captain on the Red team. Always wears a bandana).

When these guys put on weight, they are still strong and mobile. You can see it in how they compete and how they work out. I tried to articulate this to my wife and failed miserably last night. When THEY put on weight, they just become big, bear-ish sort of men. They don't just turn into flabby immobilized people, do you see what I mean? I find it interesting. (Even if I can't articulate it properly.)

My favorite part of the show is the end, when they show the person that got voted off and how they've done since they left the show. Last week, when they showed Jerry (the older guy), I almost cried...he looked awesome!
