Why is it so hard!!!!?!?!???? To write.....It's so darn complicated! There are so many rules! I'm gonna have to take some sort of course just to see if I'm doing it right! I can't take it.

As the man once said, "We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

Or something.

It's not worth doing if it's not hard.

Yeah, tell me about it. I spent parts of last week and most of the weekend on 'how do I write this?'

I made it more horrifying by using professionally published books to compare to and re-reading what I had written to understand a little more about writing.

It wasn't much, but it made studying for the (school) quiz on Monday hard. I'm still reeling in a drunken blur from all of this and I have yet to recover. When I resume my current horror novel (see sig), I have a feeling the editing process will be something similar to my recent crazyness.

Writing done well looks easy, that's why. Kind of like figure skating. Those triple jumps and spins look fairly simple. Until you strap on a pair of ice skates...

If you like what you've written and think it's good then hopefully others will too, sure there are 'rules' but what counts is that you love writing, that you enjoy writing good stories and that you still enjoy reading them weeks and months later after their completed. At least that is what I think. I have "On Writing" The Stephen King memoir on writing waiting on me at the library but it was raining too hard to go get it today. ;)

You'll like it.

I think I still remember the line: It was darker than a car load of assholes.

Ah, yes.

I dig the dark stuff, in fact I love King, Koontz and John Saul. Ever read John Saul? He's pretty good, though I confess I don't know if he's still writing, though if he's anything like most writers I doubt he could stop. ;)

I'm not sure if you're talking to me, but I love Stephen King. As I read his novels, I smile because they have this certain lighthearted glow. His words are like comedy to me, even in serious moments. Everytime I re-read something, anything by him, I am able to be sucked in.

One thing to note, in some of his books, he has a way of writing such closeness and immediacy, it's amazing. Check out Dark Tower III or even Pet Sematary. Salem's Lot is good to.

My husband found this out when I was banging my head against the wall trying to come up with the last paragraph of a chapter. He would always look at me as if I were crazy when I had problems. "If you know the story, then what's so hard about putting it on paper?" he'd say.

He offered to write the last paragraph for me, because it would be "so easy" if he knew what I wanted to say. So I said fine, told him what I needed the last paragraph to do, and then went to have a snack.

I came back half an hour later and he was still staring at the screen with only two sentences written. The first one started with the word suddenly. ;) He hasn't said a word to me about how easy it is to write since.

Yup that was to you John61480. I agree his writing has a certain something that no other does, his voice is amazing. I just looked and John Saul IS still writing...It's funny he has more out then I have read by him so I have a feeling I know what my next book will be, one of his-after re-reading the King memoir though-that is definitely my next book. ;)

I agree about Stephen King. It is amazing when you start printing out one page excerpts on your word processor and compare with all types of authors. I did this with Scribner authors Tannarive Due, Stephen King, and then there was the author of Kindred Spirit whose name I can't recall. I did this in courier with about 500 words from each authors begining chapters and it was a blast.

By the way, I meant Dark Tower II, which had the awesome writing.
