Remember our previous discussion about birds crashing into windows? Well, here's an affordable solution! Check out the press release below; if you're interested in doing an article, contact info is included:

PRESS RELEASE:

Make Your Windows Safe for Songbirds--for Under $10

October 1, 2007 -- Traditional strategies for preventing window strikes include hanging moving objects outside the window to frighten birds away, dulling any reflections and making the glass more visible to birds. But most homeowners are averse to many of the strategies offered by experts because they create eyesores or block the home owner's view. No one wants hanging balloons or strips of Mylar flying about outside their windows. And suggestions to dull reflections and make windows more visible to birds by soaping them up, smearing them with toothpaste, tacking up netting or applying tape or cloth to them are generally unacceptable to the homeowner. But there is a solution that most homeowners do find acceptable: reflective decals placed outside the
window.

Duncraft's new Save-the-Birds UV warning window decals are placed on the outside of windows and glass doors-at a spacing of one decal per three square feet of glass area. These UV tinted decals, though transparent to the human eye, reflect a solid blue image to birds-making the window glass "visible." When viewed from inside the home, the decals are virtually invisible to the human eye. Duncraft's new Save-the-Birds UV Decals are available in Snowflake, Star and Leaf shapes at a price of $9.95 for a set of six of one type. They are offered online at ww.duncraft.com

Save-the-Birds UV Decals make use of the fact that birds' sight is so much more acute than human sight. All birds can perceive in the ultraviolet spectrum, which is invisible to us. So while a Save-the-Birds Decal is see-thru for us, for the birds it is seen as solid blue-violet shape - a virtual Stop Sign - that saves birds' lives.

Thank you for posting that, Anne! I have a patio door with windows above and it has been a danger for birds. I've been looking for a good affordable solution; I'll have to check this out.

You're welcome, Glenn and Shelley! I'm going to give these a try myself. It just makes me sick when a bird crashes into one of our big windows--and that happens all too often.

This product sounds like a good idea--it won't block our views out the windows and will hopefully prevent birdie crashes!

We lost 6 hummers, a mourning dove and a baby downy woodpecker to our patio windows this year. I sure hope the decals work.

Man, I hate to hear that, Gary.

Our latest crash victim survived--a young female cardinal smacked into the glass storm door. It stunned her for several minutes but after resting a bit, she was able to fly off to the garden. I was so happy it didn't kill her and really hope she didn't have any lasting injuries.

North of there and South of here...
First year ever we've had a bird hit our glass and we've had two. The first was shaken but flew off after about 15 minutes. The second was a couple of days ago and wasn't so lucky. :(

I have an old windsock from travels years ago and never knew where to hang it. I don't care about the view -- I like watching the wind. I think I'll hang it out there tomorrow.

I'll keep an eye on those decals too. Thanks for the indo

Those decals sound like a good thing! Thankfully I've only had one bird hit my window and it was flying again in an hour. Poor little Waxwing.
...Well, one of the songbird type. I've had chickens and ducks jump at the window when they saw me, but that's a different story. They were just hungry. ;)
I really hope those decals work! Does anyone currently have them? Have they noticed a change?

We use them and they work great. You can buy them in a Wild Bird Store, etc. I plastered the place with them after my favorite cardinal died. Her name was Annie and I was irrationally attached to her.

Anyway, they work! Another good (dare I say brilliant) idea is to leave your windows dirty, that way the birds don't see the reflection of sky, trees, whatever in them.

I'm so glad they work! That is definetly on my to-do list now! Thanks!

That's so sad about Annie, and all the others. Hopefully lots of people will use the decals and stop that from happening again. :)
