In my story I have a little girl living with an aunt and uncle b/c mom is unfit. I want her to have bunkbeds, but would this be believable with only one kid?

We had a bunk bed for our son, a trundle for our daughter. Each was for their sleep-over guests. It didn't happen often, but it was nice to be able to offer their little friends a real bed instead of suggesting they bring a sleeping bag.

Our son very much liked to sleep up top and play below. Later, he read below.

Now the kids are grown, but we kept the trundle for grown-up sleep-over guests. The bunk bed is history, though.

Maryn, hoping this helped

Behind you! Boo.
I'm an only child and coveted my friends' bunk beds!

I have two kids, but each has her own room. The younger one wants a loft bed and we are considering putting one in with a desk to go under it.

I don't know if that's helpful for your story, but it's an idea.

I am an only child and I had a bunk-bed. It was for visitors. It actually had a double-bed on the bottom and a single on top, so whenever we had adult visitors I had to go up on top.

I bought my oldest a bunk bed when he was an only child. I was just trying to think ahead to sleepovers, and having a place for them, but stupid me went and filled the other bed with my own kid.

:D

Did the aunt and uncle buy the beds for her when she came to live with them? They could have given in to her demands for a bunkbed (feeling sorry for the poor kid, ya know), or they could have already been there (maybe of their own childhood beds?), or a neighbor or church could have donated them to the family (free stuff! Who's gonna say no?).

Yes. For sleepovers.

My son has one in his room. His sister obviously doesn't sleep in there with him; she has her own room. Totally believable.

I've known alot of kids with bunk beds where the other bunk was for storing stuffed animals and when friends would visit. Alot of times, it was an only child. Not always though.

My oldest had a bunk bed for a long time. It had a futon couch on the bottom and a twin mattress up top. She would sleep on the top and use the couch for hanging out with friends or watching tv. When friends slept over, they'd just pull out the futon and sleep there.

When she got too big to sleep up top, we cut the frame down and now the futon sits in my sunroom.

My younger kids want bunk beds now, but frankly, I can't afford two of them.

Thanks for so many great ideas! I forgot about the ones that are like a loft with nothing underneath. Or explaining that they were donated would be good, too.

My nephew has a bunk bed and is an only child; when my brother and I were little, he had bunk beds, but I had my own room and bed. He, like my nephew, just liked having the high bed generally, and it was handy when his friends came to spend the night.

My ex-husband has bunk beds for my son at his house. Because they were given to him by his aunt and I guess it never occured to him that he could just use one bed. But once my son starts having overnight guests, I'm sure the extra bed will come in handy. :)

I have two boys, each with their own set of bunk beds in their perspective rooms. We had purchased the first bunk bed before the second son was born. They are a great stuffed animal storage area, etc. :)

I have one daughter. I bought her a bunk bed to have someplace to store all of the stuffed animals!

Oh, yeah, I guess it would be good for sleepovers too. :)

I had bunk beds and no one slept in the other one unless someone was sleeping over. In high school I lofted the bed and put my desk underneath.

My favorite show, Emergency!, had an episode where a couple bought bunk beds, planning on more than one child, but the father died before a second child could be born. The first time the only child decided to sleep in the upper bunk, she fell out, resulting in a call to the paramedics.

It could always be one of those bunk beds that is a workspace on the bottom, you know? I love those. I may get my son one but he's so tall as it is, he may start bumping his head sooner than later:)

I had a girlfriend who had IN HER ROOM, a bunk bed and a twin. I never asked, I was young enough to enjoy jumping from one to the other, so what other reason could there possibly have been?

Absolutely. You get the extra storage space and somewhere for those sleepover guests. My kids always liked the upper bunk.

My son had a bunkbed. We turned the top level into a treehouse/fort. Needless to say, he was the popular kid with his gang, but the parents could only look at me at growl. Bummer. Instead of a mattress, we had a double bunky-board with large toss pillows. A rubbermaid cabinet of sorts for snack stash, trash was tossed out the 'window' to the trash 'hoop' across the room. It became his fave place for homework as well. Hurricane Andrew swept it away, but he's sworn he's making one for his kid one day....

My kiddo has bunk beds--bottom is the futon couch that opens to a bed. She sleeps there. She's never slept up on the top--it's her "clubhouse." There are two big drawers underneath for storage. It's great.

When I was a kid, I had a bunk bed. But that was because me and my sister shared a room, but she moved out eventually and I still slept on the bunk bed. It was cool though because I took the bottom bed and I threw all my stuffed animals and junk like that on the top.
