More Helps from Chicago Manual of Style
The Chicago Manual of Style e-mails me each month with a fun list of Q&A's. The little e-mail teaser is free and by clicking on the site itself, I can sharpen my blue pencil regarding those pesky questions that seem to keep arising, and arising, and arising.

Disclaimer: I do not work for CM and never have and don't own any stock. I just think it's a great and invaluable resource for anyone starting out.
It may seem daunting -- a 954-page orange tome -- but it's a great read, esp. the front section on making a book. It's well indexed and topics build clearly in complexity. Reading just the opening paragraphs of the core chapters gives you a good start.
If you're acquainted with it and use it, editors everywhere will bless you!
