I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it IS a sci-fi book.

What I remember about the book:

I don't know when it was written, all I know was that I read it in either late 80's or early 90's. It was an old copy, so I think it may have been copyrighted in the 70's.

It was based around a scientific project located under the sea.
There were a number of volunteers who were to be taken to the ocean to live there for a number of weeks.
I believe they were made 2-dimensional so that they could live under the sea with out oxygen tanks.
They were supplied with supplies and bicycles.
One of the women characters had alopecia, she falls in love with one of the main characters.
One of the guys some how interacts with a mermaid....who had a crush on him.
This is not a so called romance novel, it was pretty much based on the events that happened while they were doing the experiment.
And thats about all I remember. Pretty vague I know, but I loved that book and have wanted to find it in over 15 years. I can NEVER remember the author or the name....so I am hoping one of you lovely people could help me!!

There's also an LJ Community What Was That Book? It's very active, but I haven't spent enough time there to know how useful it is.

Extremely useful! They identified a picture book I have literally been trying to identify for some 25+ years, vaguely remembered from my childhood, on the strength of a few quotes and descriptions of some of the illustrations. Of course, now that I know what it is I see that it's rare, long out of print, and spectacularly expensive. Oh well, that just means I have good taste, right?

LOL I will Google up some Piers Anthony and see what I can find!
It does sound like something he would write.

Yes, it does!
If my hunting doesn't uncover anything (it hasn't in the past, and I have been known for my excellent Googling skills) I will check out these other places.
Thanks!

Wow! It took me 5 minutes or less and I found the book!!
It WAS Piers Anthony! And low and behold it is named:
Mer-Cycle
LMAO Now why wouldn't that have stuck out?
Thanks very much badducky!
I was a little off there on the dates, but I knew it had to have been before I was 13 or so.
