Ever had a long period of inactivity? Where you just couldn't write?

Well, I've had one of those for a while...but tonight, I'm on FIRE! And, every once and a while in the past few months, I thought that, well, if I'm not writing now, do I want to write for the rest of my life?

Now that my fingers are on fire, I remember: That is what it's LIKE!

Hura!

Now, to writing, my fine feathered friends.

Yes, I went for months without writing not too long ago. I had gotten depressed about HEVN SNT & come up with a couple of other story ideas, but couldn't get those started enough to get really fired up about them.

Then right before my Friday writing session at Borders (which I had been using to plan an RPG for weeks instead of writing), I was listening to a song that I realized was perfect for one of my characters. And an idea I had been playing with for the novel suddenly became the obvious path to take, & I got obsessed with writing the novel again.

It's pretty awesome.

I've just been through a 4-5month stretch where I was writing...but it was a real chore. The book's 1st draft is finished, and I'm pretty sure it's a good 'un...but for some unfathomable reason, the bleedin' thing was a really drag to write.

Just a theory, but with 2 successful novels out, perhaps writing has now fully transfered from a hobby to a job. And working is never fun.

After another couple novels you'll be coming out with lines like "Writing is the toughest job in the world. I'd rather spend 12 hours in a coal mine 6 days a week than have to write another book. But the publishers demand it, so I have to write another. Woe is me." :tongue

The other day I had a good idea... then I asked myself the "what if" question whichc lead to an even better idea! Then I asked "what if" again and it turned in to a fantastic idea! I love when that happens.

Zoombie: I had a similar period of inactivity, which strangely coincided with the release of Bioshock (saw your sig). haha I felt so bad after playing through the first time and harvesting all the slugs that I had to play the game again, rescuing the little girls instead.

I'm afraid I may have another such period on Oct 31, when Hellgate is released.

So, the only things cutting into my writing time now are/is school and marching band. We're hitting "performance mode" because our first performance of the year is in...three days.

Incidentally, we are playing Tchaikovsky, which always brings to mind that bit where Sander Cohen attacks you with a horde of splicers while playing Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies

Funny how everything seems to connect to something in some obscure way.

I delivered my next novel to the publishers in february. Haven't really written anything since then. Tried, but couldn't get really going. There have been very good reasons for this. Exhaustion being one of them. That book, the first I've ever written to a deadline, under contract, took a lot out of me. I just needed a break. There were other reasons too that made it difficult for me to write - nothing to do with writer's block, just life becoming very pressing.

Now I'm waiting to hear if the publishers want any more from me. My agent's on holiday, comes back tomorrow, I think. I'm hoping for a phone call that will get me back to work.

I know I've been away for quite a long time, but I've been lurking from time to time...

Anyway...yeah, I've done that. After about a year of not being motivated at all, and thinking about the best way to write my story, it finally hit me like a ton of bricks, and I started working on it. I worked diligently for about a month on it, until one afternoon after a particularly good session, blamo - my left hand and wrist rebelled, and I haven't been able to write since. The ideas are still there, but I physically can't strike the keys for more than a few moments at a time without pain.

*sigh*

So is the way the world turns.

Since I'm getting ready to move in a few weeks, and I have two books coming out within a few months of each other, I put myself on a leave of absence. No new writing - just revisions of other projects. So far, I kind of like having a little free time right now, but the muse is starting to whisper at me. I need to get my office packed up to keep her quiet. But once we are settled in the new house (and I'm up to my eyeballs in edits) I'll also be squeezing in writing time - hopefully it'll be that productive writing

Well, it's gotta happen some day. Now, I just need to pluck my WIP out of my old computer and transfer it to the shiny heights of Vista.
