If a novel was about martial arts yet had fictional characters with fight/training scenes etc. would this be classified as a thriller?

Sounds like action fiction! Thriller? No, imho.

Yeah, just based on what you've posted I'd say it would probably be an action novel. That's not saying that you couldn't write a thriller with martial arts in it, it's just that the fight scenes wouldn't be the central focus anymore.

There's a martial arts thriller out there now. I don't recall the title, but I did find it at the library. Think it was called Sensei or something like that.

Is there a plot? I think the plot would determine what the genre is, not just that it has martial arts in it.
And I guess it would depend on the martial arts. If it was an entire novel of Tai Chi, then it would be inaction fiction. ;)

exactly what shadow ferret said. You can have a romance with martial arts. You can have a women's fiction with martial arts. Martial arts doesn't determine the genre. I believe Eric Von Lustbader wrote several martial arts books. I'm only guessing on that one. long time ago that i saw them. Good luck with your story.
