the thread about writers you no longer read started this for me...

what writers can you not STAND to read?

Maya Angelou. Never cared for her. Seriously object to owning anything of hers (and I don't!)

That's the only one i can think of- there's a of of writers that I don't care for much, but they haven't risen to my 'NOT IN MY HOUSE' standard...

Yes!Yes!Yes!
Also, any smart-ass trying to sell by shocking people and showing off by their nerve and outstanding amount of culture. But, yeah, Dan Brown.

I can't think of any I hate.

And I've never really understood the bile that rises over Dan Brown. I started reading the Da Vinci Code, got bored partway into it and stopped. But that experience didn't traumatize me as it seems to have so many others.

You'd be traumatised if your best friend was murdered.

My best friend is the English language.

Terry Goodkind. If I want to be lectured about heroes, I'd go to somebody who at least understands that Good and Evil are invented concepts. His success has only fueled his ego, and has made him think that his views are gospel and anyone who doesn't agree with him is either stupid, immature, or too young to understand.

I don't waste my hate on people I don't know. There are writers whose work I don't care for, but my reaction to their work is never going to make me HATE them. I'd like to think my eventual readers would pay me the same courtesy, regardless of what they think of my writing.

I think I would hate a writer if she/he tried to hit me, or called me a chicken. (anyone can see that I am most definitely a Turkey!)

I think it's silly to hate people you don't know, but I cannot help it in this one instance: John Ringo.

He makes me sick.

Dennis McKiernan. Blatent Tolkein rip-off artist. Very, very blatent, to the point of making me want to demand how he got published because they're way over the line of homage and into plaigerism territory.

Mindy L. Klasky. Wretched worldbuilding, flat characters, and plots that depend way too much on coincidence.

Elizabeth Haydon. Can we say stupidest main character ever? She can't even count 9 months and believes someone called the Father of Lies, even after knowing what he does. *shakes head in disgust*

That would be my list.

Good Luck!

Mostly inside my own head.
I don't hate other writers. Why would I? There are writers whose styles I don't care for, but it's not like anybody puts a gun to my head and demands that I read them.

Good Luck!

Is Haydon the one who wrote Rhapsody? I just had a 20 min screamfest with a friend yesterday about that book. She told me I hate all female MCs. I said, "No, only dumb ones." I hate it when idiot, dependant women are protags. A total discredit to my sex. :p Ok, I'll stop ranting now.

Wow, that is exactly what I was going to say, only more graceful. Thanks!

And I loved The DaVinci Code.

True, but if strangers hate your writing, that means they've read it, which means it's published, which means you're making some money off it, and (to top it off) there will probably be people who love it! ;)

And I loved The DaVinci Code.

I enjoyed it too. Granted, I felt the characters were underdeveloped and it was a cliche ending. But, the subject matter was quite interesting and has led me to reading other books on the subjects. I consider the subject matter quite a bold move on his part.

James Patterson. He's so brief with his prose that I feel at times I'm reading a summary of the story more than the story itself.

Robin Cook. His characters don't work for me. In one of the books I read (can't remember the name), the MC was an American woman doctor (born, raised and living in the U.S.) in her 30's who, whenever something bad happened, would exclaim, "Oh my word!" And other things that didn't fit. I would torment my friends mercilessly if they talked like that. And because I don't believe in his characters, I don't care what happens to them them.

I don't hate any writers, but there are some writers whose work I just can't read for one reason or another. LKH is one.

I honestly don't understand why people are so miffed about DVC. I read it. I loved it. I went out and bought Angels and Demons the very next day.

I haven't even read the Da Vinci Code. Does that mean I live under a rock?? I agree that Patterson is very brief and to the point, a good airport or beach read (ie quick).

Tried Nora Roberts a few times and can't get into her stuff. Iris Johannsen for her eternal head stuff and dialogue, and Heather Graham's cliches.

I don't *hate* them. I just stopped reading them.
