What do you think it takes, in today's Christian market, to publish a book based on a specific topic? For example, speaking in tongues is a big topic on this board right now. Say one of the posters in that discussion decided to write their own book on the subject. (No, I'm not considering writing one.) Being an unknown, what do you think the chances of their getting published are? Would they need a theological degree or be a well-known name in a pulpit before being published in this area? What about other "teaching" subjects?

What are the issues facing Christian writers today? How are they different from challenges secular writer's face? Do you feel there are extra hurdles for Christian writers to over? If so, what are they? Theological degree, religious studies, job title, (pastor, priest, etc.,)

So, what do you think? Are fiction and inspirational writing the only avenues for those without seminary, degrees or name recognition?

If unknown names are getting published in the Christian markets I'm certainly not seeing their books in the stores. It seems like you have to have a big name and an attention-grabbing topic or a new angle on Bible study or self-help ... or just a book full of God promising you all sorts of nifty blessings *cough* Joel Osteen *cough*.

Publishing, like the rest of the "Christian" entertainment industry is still driven by sales. No big name or incredible hook, no promotion. That's been my observation and experience. There are a few exceptions, but they're in the minority.

Seems like the most inspiring stuff I read and hear these days comes via the internet. I think we're still at the very beginning of the internet revolution - we've only seen the start of what will come of it. I'd love to see the entire entertainment industry revolutionized, including publishing and especially Christian entertainment.

I see the good and the bad in this (and in my topic). Publishers have to be careful not to publish the teachings of a fox in wolves clothing; a false prophet. The bad news is that it doesn't leave much of an opening, or trust, for someone who just may know more than the hype-teachers out there.

I hate that business means more than the message. I understand the business end of it but it really does seem as if the quality of Christian entertainment suffers because of the business end. What low budget movies they put out there!

There is an exception though. Sherwood Baptist Church, in Albany Georgia has been making the most Godly movies I've ever seen. They started out with Flywheel, which was their first movie. It was low budget and acted by the local congregation. People might put the movie down because of the non-professional acting, but to be honest, for amateurs, they did extremely well. The movie was nothing less than fantastic! I've never felt the Spirit of God so strongly in ANY movie before! I believe this came out in 2003.

Then they made another movie, Facing the Giants, in 2006. A little bigger budget and more congregational actors, but you wouldn't have guessed the budget was so low! It had the look and feel of a big budget Hollywood movie. I kid you not, this movie packs a huge punch. A friend of mine had me over to watch it. I hate football movies. While the credits were rolling at the end, I left to go buy my own copy! They're making another movie right now but I can't remember the name.

www.lifechurch.tv is great. I like Ed Young, too.

I agree that Christian entertainment needs to be revolutionized, but, equally does the Christian, and what they call entertainment. Far, far, far too many Christians are still living with one, or both, feet in the world when it comes to entertainment.

I understand why Paul, in Revelation, says that in the last days it will be difficult for people to be Christians. At first I thought, "Is he insane? This coming from a man so persecuted for his faith, he was imprisoned, beaten and tortured! But now, I agree with him. Today, people are seduced by technology, toys, Hollywood, fame, friends, etc., that they lull people into complacency instead of them standing firm in their faith. These people are standing idle in the pathway to sin. To them, it's all about what they can get by with or what they can get away with. How far can they push the envelope before it's too far for God? These very people are going to have a huge awakening come judgment day. But that's another topic....

And I hope you do it, Kevvers!

I say write, whatever God puts on your heart to write. Give the results to Him. He may want you published, or He may want you to be unpublished, based on other plans He might have for you to do. I was reading something very profound just a few minutes ago in Isaiah 49 that was so applicable to me as a *cough* 'writer'...this is a Messianic passage, and deals with the feelings Christ would have being rejected by Israel:

Before I was born the LORD called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name. He made my nouth like a sharpened sword...He said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor." But I said, "I have labored to no purpose; I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing. Yet what is due me is in the LORD's hand, and my reward is with my God."

And now the LORD says--he who formed me in the womb to be his servant...--he says "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."

Here, Christ is portrayed as struggling with feelings of failure and rejection, in that he failed to convince the Jews that He was their Messiah. And yet God who 'formed Him in the womb' specifically purposed something much greater--that Christ would also be a light to the Gentiles, and that God's salvation would reach the ends of the world.

In my writing, I've struggled with failure...2 books I've written have met only with rejection slips, and I've exhausted all available publishers. My main problem is that lack of 'platform'...I'm not a good market risk. But God specifically formed me in the womb with certain gifts to use for His glory, and as it says here, "my reward is with God." So, if He just wants me to write poems for Sunday school papers, or write encouraging notes to sick friends, or post on message boards, or whatever, if I do what He's purposed me to do, I'll be content and rewarded with His pleasure. And you know, that really is the ultimate for me.

I attended a Christian Writers Conference in July and all I heard was platform...platform...platform. It made me sick to my stomach. It seems to be moving over into the fiction section too.

One (jerk) editor had some wonderful suggestions: In your query letter agree to buy a stipulated number of copies and/or use your entire advance for promotion. I had to bite my tongue to keep from asking him if in turn he'd allocate his paycheck to my house payment. I also wanted to ask him when they merged with PA.

Here all this time I had this crazy idea that it was my job to write the book and HIS job to sell it. Don't get me started, I've had it up to here with arrogant editors and snotty agents.

I'm in agreement with Pat.
I say write, whatever God puts on your heart to write. Give the results to Him. He may want you published, or He may want you to be unpublished, based on other plans He might have for you to do.
I have a writing goal (posted in Goals and Accomplishments) to leave Corporate America for good and build a freelance and novel career. It's a passion inside me. The thing is, I know I can do it. I've been in prayer and not really heard anything to confirm or abandon this plan.

However, I'm not foolish enough to ask God to bless my Ishmael if He has an Isaac plan for me. I'm capable of fulfilling my plan but why would I even want to if it turns out God's plan for my life (or writing) is different than mine? And if this is in God's plan for me, I want to do it through His strength and not my own.

I'm ammenable to whatever He wants me to do. I have a passion and a talent for writing and I don't believe I would have that if He didn't want me to use it. But, if He wanted me to move to Little Rock and pick-up lint off the floor of an office building as my job, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. (And there wouldn't be a speck of lint on those floors, either.)

Again, in agreement with Pat, whatever you do, do it for His glory, not your own. In the end, when it's all said and done, it's what really matters most. My goal is not publication. My goal is to complete the work He's given me to do and to bring Him glory. Everything else is chaff that will blow away or burn.

This is an example of the church/Christians getting sidetracked and seduced by the world and it's ways and motives. We need to be careful to examine our ways, motives, words, actions and attitudes in everything we do.
