My debut novel, Shock and Awe, came out two weeks ago. My friends had warned me that not much really happens on pub date (unless you are JK Rowling) except that your books get moved from the back of the shop out onto the shelves…if the bookstore employees get around to it. (Pub date isn’t nearly as much fun as holding your advance author’s copies in your hand for the first time.)

There were even less fireworks for me than usual, as I live in California, but my book is being published in the UK. (If you really care how this odd situation came about, there’s an interview that explains it.)

Nonetheless, friends in the UK have been reporting sightings and sending photos. The book seems to be doing well. It’s on the shelves in the Waterstones and Borders chains, as well as being sold by indies like Goldsboro and Foyles. A first-edition dealer has sent me boxes of copies to sign. And Pan has decided to publish a mass-market paperback version a year hence.

So, it’s been fun, even long-distance. And I’d like to thank the folks at this forum for all the support and advice and encouragement.

But, you know what? Those old hands around here who tell you it’s all about the writing, not about the business end? Turns out they’re right. Getting published is satisfying. But it’s not half as satisfying as writing the book in the first place.

So maybe I should shut up and get back to work now.

Yay, that's great! Hope it goes really well. And now that you realised it's all about the writing, you'll probably have even more fun at it. At least glancing at your shiny book on the shelf should help spark some enthusiasm :D Best of luck in the future!! Fireworks or not, it's a brilliant thing. I know it's your first published book, but is it your first novel as well?

Nice feeling. My print release in less than two weeks won't be nearly as dramatic, since I'm with a small POD press, but I hope if anyone sees The Space Between on a shelf in the States, they'll send me a pic.

I'll be content to stare at the cover when it's on Amazon. Oh, and hug my one free copy, of course.

I know it's your first published book, but is it your first novel as well?

Thanks, Wraith.

My first novel? Nope, not even close. The one being published is the fourth novel I completed. (And I've completed a fifth while waiting for this one to be published.)

I've found that a surprising number of writers didn't get published until they'd written three or more novels: Sue Grafton (her fifth got published) Stephern King (his fourth got published), Michael Connelly (his third got published), John Gardner (his fifth got published, followed soon after by novels one through four). George V Higgins may hold a record--he didn't get published until his fifteenth!

Congrats, but I think finally being able to walk into a bookstore and finding your book on the shelf would be a very exciting experience.

Well, I can't walk into a bookstore in my town or even my country--but here's the next best thing--a picture from Waterstones Oxford Street. (Hope this works--I've never tried to post a picture here before...)

I think this is where we're all supposed to rudely ask you 1) How much money you're making (then remind you it isn't enough) and 2) Ask you to send us all free autographed copies and finally 3) Tell you about an idea we've all had that should be published.

;)

Congratulations, David. I don't care if it's U.S. or UK, it's still cool. And you've already been bought for mass-market, that's nice too. Will it be published in the U.S., or do you not know yet? (That might come later.)

I doubt I count as an old hand, but...yeah. It's true, all the way. :)

First, congrats on getting published! Second, congrats on getting the book on the shelves! And I hope you sell millions too, esp. sitting next to a famous writer like Irving! People will be looking for that book and see yours forgetting about what they went in there for! Good luck and have fun!!!!

I appreciate this quote

Enjoy your success and celebrate.

Thanks, everybody!

And, it's easy to get close to John Irving--just change your name to something that starts with "I". The I's aren't very populated...

Wonderful news, David. We're all imagining ourselves in the same situation. It's a milestone in your literary journey, but you've got the right attitude...on to the next.

BTW, I have an in to Oprah, but you'll have to prove the book's topical and you look good on camera.
