Fractured

I just got done watching the movie and I am hoping it was a book. It was brilliant.

About three quarters of the way through I figured out how the murderer got away with it but I wasn't completely sure. Half of the fun was wondering if I was right or wrong.

Now for me, that is a good plot, story and the characters were excellent.

Thursday night we had a discussion in the chatroom for MTS and jst said something that has been on my mind. He said that I might find it easier to write if I have the solution of the crime and then work backwards.

I kept thinking while watching the movie that it would be interesting to know if that is how the author wrote this one.

What do you think, is it easier to figure out the end of the story and work backwards for a MTS story?

Involving the switching of firearms seems a bit........unlikely. Most experienced cops don't rattle easy enough to overlook something playing with their gun.

It's not a bad movie, just a few things that would make me go. "Suuuuuure."

As for it being a book, as far I know, it's not.

I think it was believable enough to suspend disbelief. The woman killed was his lover.

The ending was legally flawed and it's bugged me endlessly.

But...I've written mysteries both ways, beginning to end and end to beginning.

I usually write end to beginning. It's easier for me.

That's interesting Soccer Mom, what was the legal flaw? I believed it so, it would be good to know.

So which did you prefer, beginning to end or end to beginning?

I thought it had something to do with the guns when they zeroed in on the gun he put down near the door. I figured that would come up again, somehow.

I think it's a good idea to work backwards. I tend to get half-way through stories then can't come up with a good enough ending. If I came up with the ending first, I wouldn't have that problem.

Maybe then I won't find a good beginning. Hmm.....

At the end they have him preparing the murder case. Double jeapordy would apply. He had been aquitted of the attempted murder.

I don't know SM, I think it might just hold up. They are two separate charges though, one would suppose if he couldn't be found guilty of attempting it, it would be harder to prove his guilt in actually doing it but!

The murder now took place in the hospital NOT at the house. *wiggles eyebrows* waddya think?

Anyway, I am thinking that it is a good idea now to have the exact details of the ending of my story so I can write back from there. It might actually solve things for me.

No, Cassi. It's not legally possible. Trust me on this one. Spoiler info follows in white: Attempted murder is a lesser included offense of actual murder. He's been aquitted of part of the offense. You are estopped from relitigating the same offense.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh okay...that makes sense.

Setting aside the verdict then, what did you think of the twists? Predictable?

For me, I thought they did very well at making you wonder which way they would go with how he did it. I just wonder if this is a book and I would like to see how it was written.

I had just as much fun wondering how it was done and then finding out at the end if I was right. Unlike in the movie Premonition, the ending annoyed me because I felt it was a cheat and they just wanted it to end badly.

Which brings me to another thing, my university professor said that you can do pretty much what you like with a story as long as you don't annoy your readers or viewers. It has to be plausible or they won't trust you to tell them a good story again.

I have thought about that a lot while writing this latest novel. I want to be certain that it is plausible.

Oh yeah, I hated the end to Premonition. Nothing hacks me off worse than a completely improbable ending or one that has nothing to do with the story.

It's the unforgivable sin in a mystery.

Yeah, see, about that unforgivable sin bit. I am really worried about that. I liked fracture because though now I know the ending wouldn't work, it still made me sit there wondering if I had figured out how he managed to hide the weapon.

I did have it right however. I just wasn't sure I was. That doesn't happen often for me in a mystery story. I am always the first to figure it out. Which is why when I find one I like, I really like it.

Don't worry, it's hogwash. Unless the seasoned detective (and you don't normally have dumb detectives) is an idiot this wouldn't really happen. It's Hollywood.

No, the one about him as the kid.......the prequel to Silence of the Lambs/Red Dragon........when Hannibal is a kid during the war, where he learns about cannibalism. Ick. A rather icky movie, though weak in areas, still........icky overall.

I much prefer Meet Joe Black.
