So, an agent requested revisions on the partial. A week later, done. I hit send. Ten minutes later I get a request for a full from another agent . . . off the old, pre-revised partial.

What do I do? I made changes to the "new" partial that are plot and character relevant, and I truly believe the revision is a big improvement. I would prefer to send that version but I don't want to seem like a schizophrenic clown.

Now what?

I'd send the full with the revised version of the first few chapters from your new revised partial If you think it's better, it probably is. If the changes are big and noticeable, I'd just note in your covering letter or e-mail that you have been working on the ms. since you sent them the partial and that they will see some changes from; the earlier version.

First of all, congratulations on getting two agents interested in your work. This means there is something about your writing that's attracting professional attention. The second agent requested the full based upon your original submission. Don't second guess their motivation--send the original manuscript. If they come back with somewhat the same revision requests as the first, that would confirm a weakness in the story that you've already addressed. But there's always a chance they will accept it as is. If they do and you still believe the revision would strengthen your book, you can suggest it later once you have a contract. Good luck.

Joe's absolutely right. Also, I think "smooth move, ex-lax" is now my favorite phrase.

My instinct would be in agreement with Jo (and PeeDee) and I'd send in the full based on the partial that agent had read, without having requested changes. If those Form Rejection slips are even half right, this is a subjective business. What turns one agent on will turn another off, and so forth.

Send the revised version; let the 2nd agent know it's been revised.

Trust me, this isn't the first time they've dealt with this situation.

I've seen this thread pop up a few times today and the title makes me giggle every time. I also like "My Failure Tastes Like Bllhhh" from the Rejection board.

That was my first instinct, so it's nice to hear you say that. I would think it'd get too confusing having different versions floating around, and if you think the rewrite is better anyway, why go back?
