Here's my problem...

I'm currently writing a story that I want to update weekly on my website, sort of like a novel version of a TV series that airs every week. The storyline lends itself to this, because it's set up in such a way that there can be a new mini-adventure every week, and then a big problem that's sort of hovering nearby every week and gets solved at the very end.

Here's my problem though: I love the story and the characters and I'm eventually going to want to write a long adventure, a novel, featuring them - one I'm probably going to want to get published.

Will I be allowed to do that after I've posted their "previous adventures" online? If I pubbed online on my website, would they be considered "used" and therefore not worth any agent/publisher's time? If that's the case, I don't want to publish online.

Please help!

Don't know how an agent will feel about this but if you've developed a readership for these characters and the novel doesn't include any of your online adventures, I'd think it should be okay, even an advantage. I expect the key is to stay away from what you've already had online but I'll be interested to hear what the agents have to say.

I've read some comments about posting on your website being considered published; however, considering how many book readers there are compared to those who own computers and will read text on line, I don't think you (or any publisher) have much to worry about.

You could always consider Second Rights sales to a publisher.

I've heard that publishers won't publish a story that's been already posted online - but I'm not going to try and publish the story that I'm posting - but, just a different story featuring the same characters and world.

Although, now that I think about it, I wonder if publishers consider it the same thing? Don't know.

This is a little off-topic, but...there's lots of precedent for something like this. If you build an audience for these characters online, you can then shift the setting to a published novel - the fact that you have an audience already clamoring for the next adventure can be a great selling point to any publisher.

The tricky part, of course, is building that online audience.
