I just picked up this book called "Fast Fiction" by Roberta Allen. It's a great book for anyone interested in writing "short short" fiction. I'd never even heard of it before.

Just wondering if anyone else writes this kind of short fiction.

Yes, I've written a little of it.

How is the market for fast fiction?
Are people looking for things like that?
I'm going to try my hand at writing them, just trying to find out if this will be more of a personal writing style or if I could actually sell stuff :grin

Within the length range where fast fiction falls, the shorter a story is, the harder finding markets for it seems to be. I can't compare markets for fast (or flash) fiction and markets for longer shorts, because I know too little about the latter. There are buyers, though.

Flash fiction is awfully tough to write well, but there is a pretty good market for it. If you can write it well, you shouldn;t have any trouble finding buyers.

I enjoy writing flash, even though it isn't easy.

I've had several stories entered into contests and posted over at Anotherealm, and I've found that very few markets are willing to pay for that form of fiction, even though it has gotten more popular.

You just have to check out the market search engines to find them, like Spicy Green Iguana.

Good luck!

Oops. Forgot to mention I did find a mag that will pay for one lead flash story a month. Flash Me Magazine.

depending on your genre, you'll find various pay ranged for flash fiction. even being paid industry standards doesn't amount to much. from what i've heard, the flash fiction market is always looking for new material. more of it can be published, more of it can be read. it can be processed quickly.

short shorts are like poetry. it's condensed and difficult to write well, as already said. more literary magazines are accepting it, although they're a lot slower than genre mags. sci fi seems to have embraced it the most, many websites accepting and paying for it, as well as print mags.

You can find print and online markets through Pamelyn Casto's FlashFictionFlash newsletter. Markets are nonpaying more often than not; some pay in copies.

I don't know why people say flash is harder to write than regular-length stories. For me, it's the opposite.

I also find shorter things much easier to write.
I doubt I will ever even write a full length novel, but I can write novellas quite well.
To each his own :grin

If you check out g.ca (http:nfg.ca) you will find details of NFG's flash fiction. This Canadian magazine runs a 69 word flash fiction contest. The contest is ongoing and there is a $69Canadian prize. Best of all there isn't an entry fee.
Happy Writing

I have also seen markets requiring fiction as short as 50 words.

I write fast/flash fiction every once in a while. They may be challenging but they are fun! :D

They get to nominate entrants for the Pushcart Prize.

Are they trustworthy? I have been to the site and they want my address (in the case they publish something), just wondering if others have done this.

I am weary of giving my address out online, unless I know about them.

Try www.vestalreview.net. The current issue has some really good flash fiction stories (IMO).

There are ff markets, you can find them in the searchable market lists like Engen. Ideomancer is one.

ralan.com lists a lot of paying markets that use flash fiction. Alienskinmag.com is a good place to submit your SF, Fantasy, or even mystery FF. They usually need ms. under 1,000 words.
