I remembered Evergreen from the 60s.
So I sent in a short story by email, according to their guidelines.
No acknowledgment, no receipt, no response.
That was four months ago.
Same thing with the Fog City Review
Except now they send me notices about their contests.
Anyone know if either or both of these magazines are still in business or ever respond?
Would a follow up email do any good?

neither evergreen nor fog city are listed in the 2006 novel and short story market.

This is what's listed on www.duotrope.com

Evergreen http://www.duotrope.com/market_1969.aspx

Fog City http://www.duotrope.com/market_1620.aspx

Fog city is temporarily closed to submissions and the turn around time on Evergreen looks like it's closer to 90 days. So, I would say, wait for Evergreen and consider Fog City a no based on them being closed to submissions. Good luck.

Hmm, I don't know these magazines. Sorry. But I will say, not every magazine acknowledges your submission. It's not odd, in my own experience. Actually, I'm doublechecking my submissions, and of the stuff I have out now, none were acknowledged. You're getting email from them, so obviously they received them--they got your address. Most have guidelines for how long to wait before querying on status. I'd check. But four months isn't necessarily that long. I've been waiting on 2 for 6 and 8 mos. argh.

oops. Nevada just posted. Go with that. :) Though, I guess it would depend when Fog closed for submissions--was it before or after you submitted. So it MIGHT not be a no. It looks like they got swamped? So maybe that's the delay if it was before?

That first post is almost a sad, lonely poem... :)

It is a sad and lonely poem. Do you wanna publish it?

But I did send the Fog City piece out four months ago. So maybe they're just backed up. Which means Evergreen has got my other piece for 120 days. But I'm still reluctant to follow it up.
So the wait goes on.

I spit tea all over my keyboard! That was so funny!

Don't worry; I'll never follow up.

I can't find guidelines for Evergreen Review anywhere at all. All they seem to have is an email address on their web site, so apparently they only take esubmissions.

I would just wait, but if you're still doing that at the 6 month mark, I'd think about sending a follow up. Let us know what happens either way.

One reason why it might take long is that it looks like they're just an online annual now. But they're apparently still run by the same editor as from its paper beatnik heyday.

New issue of Evergreen went up the other day. Did you ever hear back from them?

Nope. But I ought to check to see if I'm in it. I think I started sending that story elsewhere.

If Evergreen Review accepts your work, you'll hear from them. The editors just accepted a story that I submitted this month (October) so you will be notified if your work is accepted. This was my first submission to them so I don't know if no news is good news or if they just don't respond if they don't decide to publish a story.

Congratulations on the Evergreen acceptance!
If you sent them something in October and they already accepted it, then I would suppose mine is a case of no news being bad news, since I sent mine in May.

Congrats to you johnnysannie -- new issue has some pretty good stories.

Based on the quick response you'd gotten, I'm not going to keep waiting for my submission (it's been over three months), but send it elsewhere.

Is it normal or expected to send out a quick formal withdrawal mail in such a case? I'd still like to have a chance at having ER as a pub credit so I want to leave the door open for the future.

Whenever you want to withdraw a story, always send a polite email to the editor. The easiest way to close a door is to have the editor decide they want the story and find out you didn't let him/her know it is not available anymore.

I've never submitted to Evergreen, so I'm not familiar with their guidelines. Do they accept simultaneous submissions? If not, then a withdrawal email is needed before you submit elsewhere. If simsubs are OK, you're free to send the story elsewhere without withdrawing from Evergreen.

I wouldn't automatically assume your story is dead there just because another writer got a quick response. Three months is not that long a wait in the litmag world. I've had a couple of acceptances 7-8 months after I submitted them. Both came after months of obsessively watching other writers get quicker responses on the "what's new" page at Duotrope. I've also had stories taken in 1-2 months. I hate waiting, but I've found it is worth it sometimes.

I would not send a withdrawal after just three months; I generally allow at least twice as long as guidelines state because there are often valid reasons why a response has not yet been received. Sometimes no news IS good news; sometimes not.

Ok gang, I'll wait on this one.

I'm an endless reviser though so in taking a look at the story I changed it so drastically and made it so much better that I almost wish they would just reject it. I'm very excited about the new version and can't wait to send it out.

At long, long last (the issue was delayed for some unknown reason) my story at The Evergreen Review is up.
