I know agent hate it when your query starts with the wrong Mr/Ms, but...

note: there should be an "s" after the agents.

So I got a request today for the first 50 pages. I was very excited and read through it pretty quick.

Then I read it again and noticed it started, "Ms. [last name]".

And then I said, "Huh."

That does not match my chromosone set, so to speak. Sort of gave me pause for thought.

But whatever. I know agents are overworked and have tons of queries to deal with, and even though I think it's kind of a stretch to assume "Robert" could be a gal, I'm willing to forgive. It's just funny that when we make the mistake it's instant disqualification, but when they do the response is more of a "meh. I'm not willing to look a gift horse in the mouth."

And I certainly am not. A form acceptance is way better than a form rejection, no matter what the greeting presumes.

I get all my utility bills mailed to me as Mr. because my first name can be confused with the opposite sex. I had to get over letting that bother me a long time ago! (that and the constant misspelling and often mispronounciation of said name)

Look at it this way: They were so excited to get their hands on this awesome, mind-blowing piece of prose that they made a typo while writing up the request.

Now you know why I write Dear Firstname Lastname.

It's inelegant, but one is unlikely to guess wrong.

First, congrats on getting the request! I hope it goes well and you recieve another letter asking for the full with an acceptance letter soon to follow!

As for the name mistake, they didn't do that purposely and probably didn't even notice the error. Its something to laugh about though. People have a hard time pronouncing my last name and spelling it so I'm used to it now. It will never get old though lol.

I once got a rejection addressed to "Joe" instead of "Zoe." I could understand this if I had handwritten the letter - a cursive "J" looks a bit like a cursive "Z" - but it was typed. This wasn't the first time I've gotten letters addressed to "Joe," either.

That's one of two standard business letter saluations. Nothing inelegant about it, rather just good business sense.

tj, who wrote may a business letter in the business communications classes required of her degree

Yeah, but what are the chances you'll find an agent out there named Firstname Lastname?
