Hello,

I just joined AW yesterday. I have a question. I’m looking for someone to act as an agent, manager or publicist. The catch? I can’t afford to pay right now. I’ve heard of people who will act in one or more of these capacities with the basic agreement that they’ll make money when the author begins making money. Is there anyone here who might be willing to do such a thing? Or might anyone here know someone who would?

Thank you,

Scott Harper

No agent should ask you to pay them before they've sold your book, far as I know. To find agents, use a site like AgentQuery, QueryTracker, Preditors and Editors, and the Beware and Background Checks forum on this site. Hope that helps!

No fee

I don't know about puliscists or managers, but legitimate agents do not charge fees and only work on commision. Which is normally 15 percent. Never pay an agent money! That's not how it works - the only fee that may arise is for photocopying and that is normally taken from the sum of your first royality check and should be under 100 bucks if that.

I wouldn't worry about a publicist or manager, normally an agent is all that is needed to get your book sold to a major publishing house. The major houses do all that for you.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, ditto what Brookie said. I was sorta vague, but that's basically what I meant.

Agents, managers, and publicists have different jobs. You might conceivably need all three at some point, but if you're seeking publication, the odds are that you only need an agent.
