Let's use this thread to discuss the setting of our fantasy books. I'll start with mine.

=======================================================

Destiny of Valor is set in the land of Daltoniph. Covering an area of over one thousand square miles, and having a total population of only about twelve thousand people, Daltoniph is the smallest nation in the world. Because of this, many kingdoms not allied to it don't bother to invade it. Well protected by its five bordering allies, Daltoniph had no need for an army, and thus had none. However, the hamlets, villages, towns, and the capitol themselves were protected by guards who kept the peace and maintained order. Daltoniph is a land consisting of lush valleys, forests, grasslands, several mountain ranges, and a barren wasteland.

One day however, a powerful wizard named Zortega arose to power. Setting his goals to using his power to conquer his homeland, Zortega possessed knowledge of many spells, including some that only he knew of, stolen from his mentor whom he killed just as he was about to destroy their scrolls as he was terrified that they might be used for evil. Using powerful magic, Zortega carved a gothic castle out of Mt. Hades, the highest point in the land in Daltoniph's wasteland. After devastating the armies and castles of Daltoniph's bordering allies, he invades the Daltoniph king's castle, killing him, then taking the crown for himself, Zortega became targeted by warriors and fighters from Daltoniph's allies, each of whom was killed and ressurrected as an undead minion for use as a bodyguard and soldier he would use in his army to conquer the surrounding lands, and eventually, the rest of the world. He was finally slain by a valiant hero who came to Daltoniph flying on the back of a dragon. The dragon, named Vehelitz, destroyed his army while the hero himself engaged the wizard in combat and emerged victorious. Zortega fell into a nearby fountain which he had created and used as a source of magic which was now his final resting place, and which over time, would be damned with the essence of his soul. Before dying he vowed that fate would raise another to take his place and resume his work.

The hero brought back Zortega's head to the kingdom. Because of their experience, the newly crowned prince ordered that the kingdom build an army to defend itself as well as taking possession of the lands of its fallen allies to strengthen them from future invasions and uprisings. Because he was feared in his homeland, Vehelitz accepted the offer of its grateful citizens to stay and he chose to become their guardian against evil. Vehelitz to fight by their side and the kingdom's magicians who offered their talents to the fighting force, Daltoniph's army became the most powerful in the world.

The main storyline begins one hundred years later with a cult consisting of the most blackhearted individuals from around the world, led by a direct descendant of Zortega bent on avenging his ancestor, banding together in Daltoniph for the purpose of raising the next incarnation of Zortega to use in their goal of world domination as there is no known spell to restore the dead to their previous life. History will soon repeat itself and another champion must arise to end the evil influence of Zortega once and for all.

Now talk about yours.

Mine is set in the countryside, in a small farming village. Not because it's cliche, but because I live in a village myself, and found it easier to identify with my main character, (even though he doesn't live there- yet). Plus, I love the countryise and forests, and my main setting is the enchanted boggart-haunted woods surrounding the village. That's all I could think of, but my main character isn't very developed yet since I'm early on in the book.

My setting is our own world, over a millennium after a supernatural catastrophe realigned landmasses, completely changing the map, set technology back to the medieval stage, wiped out much of humanity, and weakened the barriers between worlds, letting all sorts of horrors loose on earth.
A nation rose from the ashes, uniting those who hadn't fallen under the sway of the various evils, formed an army to fight back, and in time expanded across most of the inhabitable world (an area roughly the size of north America). They fought many conflicts with the savage, demon-corrupted humans of the wasters, and three major wars with an army of undead, spawned in the original catastrophe. The final one ended in a draw: The dark army was scattered and suffered great losses, but the One Nation shattered, turning from a massive powerhouse of unity and ethical teachings, to squabbling city-states and petty kingdoms. Now it is three hundred years later, humanity is still divided, and signs are that the undead army is coming out of hiding . . .
My first two books take place on the edge of the inhabitable world, a wild, dangerous land ruled by none. Where might makes right, and there is plenty of room for many an old evil to lurk and feed.

Have you ever been to a real castle? Especially one of the gothic period?
Bodiam is my favourite castle ever - fireplaces in almost every room! A moat!
But Zortega sounds more the sort to build a Goth Castle than a gothic castle.

My current WiP is set in the Maerchenwald (folktale-forest) and German Small States, late 1700s.
The work-in-abeyance is set in East Anglia in the 1600s.
Works-not-yet-in-progress are set in my workplace with magic added, and in East Anglia in the 1800s.
I guess I don't have that much imagination.

Several mountain ranges? Even little mountain ranges are . . . y'know, pretty big. And why do you need more than one?

My most recent fantasy setting is a small town in East Tennessee, and an alternate-dimension version of the town full of headless monsters and other menaces. In the Cumberland mountains, if it matters.

But since you asked: rural Africa.

I'm not the kind to give long answers about works in progress, in part because I'd rather conserve that energy for the piece itself.

Bodiam's on my short list of castles I haven't visited.

It matters more what you do with the setting than what the setting is.

Mine takes place in Crin, the only predominantly non-magical nation on the Eastern Continent (no name for it yet.) To the North-East is Fairyland, the Icelands to the South, and the Evil Empire (proper name is Dolens Odoceo) to the West. I'm sure there's a forest of doom on the other side of the EE, but no one talks about it because those walking trees are such an embarrassment.

I'm not sure if I want to stick Dolens Odoceo on the same world as Crin. It doesn't really fit with the rest of the world's politics, since the Emperor would be constantly invading. But I'm sure I could make it work if I really wanted to.

Does urban fantasy count? In that case, mine's set on a college campus in southern Missouri. That's "Mizzourah" to you native folks.

I'd really like to see more fantasies set in Africa/Australia, so everybody who's writing one gets a rep point. :)

Mine takes place in the distant future. It is shaped by a series of events caused by a rogue assassin who kills the president on national television and declares the world to be free. He leaves the planet in the hands of an organization he set up to ensure the proper balance while maintaining a neutral stance independent of any nation. Generations later the group falls apart as the world approaches a war that may end all human civilization due to the normal issues like religious differences. A scientist, utilizing the deadly technology left behind by the organization, makes a last ditch effort to save humanity by solving what he believes to be the one flaw of all religions, the lack of proof. He creates Gods using nanotechnology that at first approach each nation independently as their respective deities, telling them to lay down their arms after performing what can only be described as miracles. After enough generations the religions begin to meld and any means to disprove the Gods are done away with.

The story begins centuries after the process finished. Almost all evidence of the old world has been done away with. Technology has been limited to 18th century levels at its most advanced with a few exceptions that exist through "magical" means like television and telephones. Transportation is done by horse and the mightiest weapons are the sword and crossbow. Despite the technological limitations the society acts like modern day, where luxuries like the stock market are able to exist. For the most part the world is at peace, only disrupted by minor petty crimes. The Gods themselves must follow strict guidelines so that power cannot corrupt them and cannot kill any man deemed innocent. Several failsafes are put in place to stop any God from going rogue. Heretics, those who refuse to acknowledge the Gods for whatever reason, are allowed to exist provided it does not interfere with the set order of the world. Exceptions do exist as history cannot be completely erased due to nuclear development. Areas around nuclear sites are closed off by walls and are called forbidden for anyone to enter, which also includes the Gods. Any individual who attempts to enter the forbidden zones or has acquired information that may disrupt society is deal with in a special manner. They are "killed" by a fellow heretic who is then executed by man's court. The victim is actually transformed into a giant beast called a Zuku, incapable of speech. These creatures are scattered across major roadways to prevent travel and are executed on national television by heroes as entertainment.

I know the original part of the backstory is a bit unbelievable and cliche but I have no idea how else to explain how this world came to be. I hope the rest gives a good idea what the setting is like,

12th century Cairo -- with a necromancer, ancient Egyptian magic, an ensorcelled knife, two warring sects of Assassins, a hot Persian concubine, and rampant ass-whuppery (that's a word, I swear!). It's fantasy in the mold of Robert E. Howard, Harold Lamb, and the Arabian Nights.

Mine is set in a fantasy world.

No, really.

I made the whole thing up. :D Okay, okay--it's set in a land with eight different kingdoms---and another continent to the east that might remind some people of a place that Homer once wrote about.

And no--not Homer Simpson! doh! I refuse to have a town called Springfield.

Speaking of Australia, have you ever read a real Dreamtime story? Dreamtime stories are, how to put this mildly, very unusual.

That said, I am doing a Dreamtime-inspired POV as a part of my novel. It is going to be buried deep in the book- hopefully my readers will be hooked by that point, and will continue reading no matter how unusual the narration :)

DwayneA, I am wondering about your choice of topics. Share your fantasy heroines. Share your fantasy settings. What's next? Fantasy heroes? Fantasy magic? :)

somewhat thorny tonight,
Rose
