Subjunctive issues. Had or Have?


I would never have seen who lived in apartment 505 if it weren't for the kidnapping attempt.

I've usually seen people write it this way:

"I never would have seen who lived in apartment 505 if it weren't for the kidnapping attempt."

I don't know if that's better or worse.

Have, since it follows "would."

In subjunctive mood, you can also do:

"If I hadn't come across the kidnapping attempt, I would never have seen who lived in apartment 505."

I don't know if that's better or worse.
