I agree with the votes for the first one. Though if you'd like to emphasize the plurality of the players, you could say "I thought editing the wiki was the players' job." This says it's the job of all the players. But the second example is always incorrect, no matter the number of players.

Yeah, having "a" before "players" definitely connotes the singular, so it should be "player's". Of course you could always be more modern and just say "playaz" without punctuation and cover all your bases.

If you think of this as a responsibility or duty rather than a hired position, it is always one job no matter the number of participants, as in "Tackling is the job of the defensive players (the players' job, such as in rugby or American football)" or "Caring for me after my parents' death became my uncle and aunt's job." When a job is performed by two or more independently, such as in a position for hire, those are their jobs, as in "My uncle and aunt both have jobs at the post office."
