My sis is editing a book for a friend of hers, and they are having a debate over which is right, as in "They stood next to.."

He claims he was taught in school that "each other" means two people, and "one another" refers to three or more. I must confess, I've never heard of such a thing.

What do you think?

I would write 'each other' for two people.

Hey, how about solving it like this: They stood together. Could be two or twenty.

They stood close together, sharing their warmth...
They stood apart from each other, as though mundanity were a communicable disease...
They stood next to a hydrant...a phone booth...a pile of dogshit they both (all) saw but no one (neither) acknowledged...
