Admittedly, I'm about a month away from getting started on a new novel, but in my brain I'm already beginning to bat around ideas. I have three potential novels right now, and before I really get stuck on one I'm wondering what the general opinion would be. IE, which one would you be most likely to pick up? I'm hoping you AWers can convince me to get all psyched up about the one that will be most commercially viable. Instead of, you know, the weird one that nobody will ever buy. ;)

So, your choices are:

1) Science fiction about a young widow from a colony planet of Earth. Takes place after the colony planet rebelled (parallels to American Revolution) and was cut off completely from Earth. Young widow travels back to Earth with her father, a high-ranking politician, to open peace talks for the first time in a generation. She gets sucked into the weirdness of an Earth that has gone crazy for genetic manipulation, gets kidnapped by the leader of the Earth-based revolution, and is inducted into a secret alien society.

2) More science fiction; this one follows a spaceship captain with a tormented past as he attempts to retain his honor while the solar system is falling into corruption and chaos. A military experiment has split time into two "threads" that periodically overlap, and the two timelines have gone to war. Slowly his only goal becomes the salvation of his younger brother, but when little bro gets killed he goes nuts.

3) Non-magical fantasy about a young girl who takes on the role of squire for the king's right-hand knight to avoid having her virginity auctioned off. This one's not really well plotted but it will involve war and romance.

All three sounded interesting to me. Personally #3 with the girl trying to save her virginity got my attention, even if the plot is not completely worked out yet. That's just me thought. I'm all for the girl going to any extreme to save her family jewels from being sold to the highest bidder. I feel your pain as I'm in a similar situation. I've given up on novel #1 that is finished, and am now torn between two other manuscripts that I started. I want to work on the one that might get me an agent but I'm not sure which one that will be. Oh the stress of trying to get and agent then published.

I think all three are interesting, but I like #3. I am a sucker for war and romance in period pieces and fantasy!

The third one sounds like a wonderful basis for a character-driven story. Personally, I'd go with that one.

Wow. I picked #3 before scrolling down the thread.

I'd suggest that the rebuffed paramour be an undead sorcerer and buccaneer.

No?

No.

I'll just... um... let myself out.

Hahaha.

Okay just to add a bit more info since #3 seems to be the favorite here, the setup is as follows:

Girl with mysterious past is raised as a lady-in-waiting for a lord's daughter. Kingdom is prepping for a big war on the horizon and the king's way of resolving internal conflict and unifying the kingdom is to have a tournament. He needs to offer a big prize for all the young knights he wants to fight his war... so he decides to offer girl's hand in marriage to the knight who wins the tournament. After all she's not valuable for alliances. Little does he know the girl is as smart as she is pretty. The king's really hideous old huge right-hand knight has just returned from scouting... and girl asks him to fight in the tournament. He wins, a few more twists happen, and she ends up (with his permission) disguising herself as a boy and becoming his squire, thus evading a bunch of horny young knights.

Actually this is a short story I wrote, but when I got to the end I realized, 'This is just the beginning.' :)

No, seriously, 2. 2 is more creative, more original, sounds cooler and has the opportunity for the main antagonist to be the main character himself!

I find it ironic that nobody has voted for the one I was leaning towards: #1.

See? I always pick the one nobody else wants to read. :)

I quite like the idea of #2 as well.

#3's kinda been done all over the shop previously. Girl dresses up as boy to hide from sex/unwatned marriage/evil sorcerer is old hat. Doesn't mean you can't do it with all sorts of new angles and conflicts and what not, though. But the idea of a starship captain, going mad and twisted timelines is just really cool. Of course I've just finished Scott Westerfeld's "The Risen Empire" (both books in one) and am rather partial to the old space captain as broken hero.

Cheers, Lisa.

I'm the oddball. I like #1. But I also like #3. And #2 doesn't sound bad, either...

I guess you'll just have to write all three. But do #1 first. :D

I'm throwing my vote in for number one. Two was my second favorite and three my third (heh how that turned out). I'm interested to see what would happen in your number one but your number two is a close second.

They are all good ideas though :D

Woo hoo, some votes for number one! ;)

Actually I think you guys have convinced me to go with #3. Yeah, it's a plot that has been done before, and it's simple, but I think maybe simple is good. I always wade in way over my head with these huge epics and stuff and I think it might be nice just to write something simple, straightforward, and fun. :)
