Thanks, Toothpaste.
I'm not depressed, for the record. I've had mixed reviews and very little publisher backing/promotion. I think my expectations were too high.
I'll just have to do better with my next book.![]()
Probably not for the same reasons, but I had a huge post-publication letdown after my first novel. The thrill went on until I saw my first novel on a bookshelf, picked it up, and realized I had to forget that book, go home, sit down, and start another book from scratch.
Somehow, I guess I'd been thinking of a book publication as the end of writing. When I realized it was really just the beginning of doing it all over again, there was a big, big letdown.
) Also, if you haven't already--make sure you post a thread about the book in the AW Library. One nice thing about the Library is that AW gets a TON of spider crawls per day and your post will get thrown around the web, plus will show up in the New Posts for everyone to look at. Just follow the guidelines in the link here and you'll soon have your very own page on the site! I want the chance to be depressed!
I think when your dream happens, you kind of want your life to change. You don't dream that life trogs along just like always.
Maybe the lesson is to acknowledge that the publication of the book is only one part of the dream, that we want the reading public to sit up with its eyes wide open and go, 'DAMN, that's some book!' Or at least for there to be some kind of hoop-la, for the world to acknowledge this great thing you just did - wrote a book and got it published!
Can we have a virtual launch-party on AW? I'll bring the gin and the 'where do you get your ideas?' -type of question.
Think of it this way Shadow, you've been working really hard to get an agent and then published (as all of us are/have), all you want is to get published, then finally after all your hard work and expectations you are, and what happens. . . a big fat nothing. The publishing house doesn't stand behind your work, the only people who really know your book exists are your friends and family.
