When I mentioned to Nora that various untrue things were being said about her -- on this and other forums; as I said before, those of us who know her find the same sorts of things popping up on a regular basis -- she asked if I would mind posting a note from her.

I'm sure some of you will believe I wrote this myself, that I don't know Nora from Adam (or Eve!), and that I'm just trying to make myself sound important or something. Doesn't matter to me, really, but I hope you believe it for her sake.

Oh -- and for those who read a snippet of something, or see something quoted from a supposedly unimpeachable source (about Nora or any other writer), all I can suggest is that you cite the source, very specifically, and let people read it and make up their own minds. And maybe check the author's own website for true "facts" rather than speculation.

So, Nora asked that I post the following:

I thought, since my name's cropped up, I'd address a few of the statements, speculations and theories.

Though I write under two names, I'm only one person. I do not, never have, and never intend to write with a 'team'. The solitary aspect of writing is, for me, a perk--and I don't play well with others. I do not, never have, never will, use ghosts. If it has my name on it, I've written it. All by myself.

I do not have hypergraphia. Jeez! It's incredibly weird to hear that someone I don't know, likely have never met would state I have some odd condition as if it's a fact. What I have is a job I love, a fast pace and a great deal of discipline.

Pace is as individual as process.

Cheshire Cat and I go way back. I appreciate her giving me the avenue to set the record straight in this forum.

Nora Roberts

Celebrities have dumb things said about them all the time. Why would Nora Roberts care that people say she has hypergraphia? Especially coming from silly people who don't represent her readership & are probably just jealous of her success?

Guess I think it would be more worthwhile to ignore it.

But, please pass along to Ms. Roberts that she should come on over to AW in person. I would be thrilled to hear about her writing & how she became successful, etc.

...actually I always thought that Cheshire Cat might *be* Nora Roberts.

I've never read a book by Roberts but she's always such a class act whenever she appears on the internet, I'm planning on rectifying that soon.

I know that Nora Roberts, having read one of her novels, is NMS. But that is neither here nor there. She's a published, successful novelist. She must be doing something right. I commend her prolific legacy and her dedication to the craft of writing. I also don't believe everything I read, especially not rumours.

Geez, why would anyone make things up to make her look bad. I prefer to criticize her writing. :p

my wife loves nora roberts. as i recall, her nom de plume is j.d. robb, and she loves those, too.

funny you mention 'montana sky,' that came in the other day through our blockbuster mail movie... thing. anyway, we popped it in. well, i got about twenty minutes into it and starting drifting away to play 'star wars: battlefront,' and came back to catch the end of it. pretty cheesy ending, even for a t.v. movie, which disappointed her. oh, well, she loves her books, which is what matters, eh?

Have to admit, I laughed at the "rectifying" bit. :) But I did know what you meant.

No, I'm not Nora. I'm happy with my own (far less stellar) career, though I have more than once wished for her discipline and energy.

As for why Nora would care what's being said about her on a forum such as this one, as I said, it's a problem she's had to deal with because rumors CAN affect how the public perceives you, and the public is filled with book-buyers.

If you go by the membership numbers, this is one of the larger forums, and I don't doubt a lot of readers lurk. Add to that a number of aspiring writers who will one day be published and able to repeat inaccurate information about a peer within the industry, and the problem grows.

Sure, Nora's agent and publisher -- and anyone who knows her -- know the truth. But other people might read, listen, and believe. And who knows what damage that might do?

Look, we all have to take the usual knocks. Reviews telling us our book sucks and our dog is probably ugly too. Those god-awful "reader" reviews on places like Amazon, that too-often read like personal slams and sometimes outright character assassination.

You put your work out there, and it's fair game. Understood.

But personal stuff? Rumors that you might have some weird mental condition and that might be a factor in your amazing success? Rumors that you don't actually write what's published in your name?

Uh uh. Not fair. Not what any of us signed on for when we took our work public.

Nora cares about that sort of thing. And I don't blame her, because if it were me, I'd care too. That's why I tell her when I see nonsense pop up.

Roberts

Do these things usually show up on romance forums? I've never heard any of them. I do sometimes cite Nora Roberts as someone who writes fast, writes well, and who makes a lot of money, but also as someone who's one of my favorite writers.
