I've heard the existence of the halfblood, angsty because they are rejected by both races, decried as a cliche... but when I looked for some of these stories to research the character archetype I couldn't find any. So I'd appreciate it if anyone could recommend a good novel in which the main character, or at least a major character, is an angsty halfblood who suffers from racial prejudice. Bonus points for Amazon links to the book. :)

When you mentioned halfbreed, the character that comes to mind is Tanis Half-Elven from The Dragonlance Chronicles if memory serves me correctly.

Check out Barb & J.C. Hendee's Nobel Dead Series. The first book is Dhampir, and there's quite a few more.

If we're including fantasy manga, the entire Inu-Yasha series is an example. The main male character is a half-demon, and mixed breeds are feared by humans and scorned by demons.

This isn't a novel but IMHO the worst example of the "half-breed" character. Anyone remember the TV show Birds of Prey? Damn, it could have been something if it weren't for such autrocious writing.

Huntress, the daughter of Batman and Catwoman (in a whole different universe) was a half breed, or as they often put it - half-meta - because Cats was supposedly Meta powered and Bats was just a trained normal. She was an outcast because she wasn't a normmy like other people and not a full meta like the underground mutant, oops, meta society. The thing that I couldn't figure out is that if all the other supers were full meta, then that would mean that both of their parents had super powers, meaning that there was a whole lot of shakin' going on among the capes. Were the heroes shacking up with the villains like Bats?

Pardon the rant but it turned out to be a lame excuse to give the character an agnst issue. The earlier examples in the thread offer a good view on half breeds but might I suggest looking into todays modern culture, at how we treat folks from mixed nationalities. When we see a child from a black and white couple, do we see the child or do we see the contrasting parents. Sadly, it is how a lot of people perceive the situation. Children of mixed nationalities do feel the heat because of other's prejudice and fears. It can make life awkward and hard, to say the least.

Hope that gives you some fuel to fly with.

Was Blade angsty? It's been way too long since I've seen those movies.

Hmmm... lessee... nothin off the top of my head... I have an angsty half dragon in one of my own stories, does that count?

Through a Crimson Veil, by Patti O'Shea. The hero's mother was human, raped by a demon, and he was the product. He grew up to be a demon hunter, hating them on general principle, until he falls in love with the heroine (also a human/demon halfbreed). Lots of angst.

I agree with Pike. There's often a social message about racial/ethnic/cultural acceptance and rejection in a half-breed's psychological or emotional tug-o-war. Whether its overplayed or cliched depends on the audience its played to.

And the stigmata he had because of it

Mr. Spock. But he wasn't so angsty as he just didn't give a flying crap.

I have a half elf, but he's only rejected by the elven society. The elves in my world are fiercely xenophobic, and consider themselves far above the lesser humans, so it was a major, well, crime really, for his mother to sleep with a human man.
He's got bigger things to worry about anyway ;)

Dungeons & Dragons deserves some blame here, with a whole generation of fantasy readers/writers growing up with half-elves and half-orcs. I wouldn't use either term to describe a character even if a policeman told me I had to, frankly.

Half-breeds are such an obvious outcome, though, if you've got a world with several intelligent species that can interbreed, the way a lot of fantasy does. I suppose the angst is optional, but it does make for an interesting character. Of course, I'm a little biased since I'm using it in my own WIP (tangentially)--it sort of crept in without my realizing it, actually, until I read this post!

Okay! :) *takes notes* Any more recommendations before I go shopping? I don't really see any half-aliens mentioned other than Spock and yeah, he fails at angsty lol. Or how about half-animal? Or something like, a rejected bastard son a nobleman sired on a slave or servant of a different race, or a child of an arranged political marriage between two countries or races...?

Tarzan comes to mind, also the story of Amala and Kamala, but of course they were not rejected initially and not half-breeds at all.

Googled. There's lots out there to find. Maybe you could check this out;

If you're looking for archetypes, I think your best option is to check the religions and mythologies, as the are filled with stories about how gods have interbred with humans; the most famous is to find in the New Testament.

Harry Potter was mentioned. Apart from the half-wizard/half-Muggles in there, don't forget Hagrid. He's got a harder time of it than those halfblood wizards.

Does Angel count, as a vampire with a soul? He can't fit in with the humans and can't fit in the vampires. I think Buffy and Angel both have some half-demons too.
