Mardi Gras

That's the word we're hearing on the EPIC lists today, too. One author reported they are being told to send certified letters requesting rights back.

They have been not looking good for a few months so I suspect this is true.

Strange way to run a business....

There's more in this blog entry, which contains a post allegedly written by the CEO of Mardis Gras (who posted on AW in defense of her company earlier this year). The blogger does warn that this comes from an anonymous source. However, if this is legit, my response is:


The whole thing has become a train wreck. In blog comments, anonymous people are casting aspersions about writers and editors, and in many cases, it looks like a smear campaign. And then there's this (that author's rant has been making the rounds)...



I usually avoid that smiley because it's so, well, long, but that whole mess really deserves it.

As with the Trisk debacle ... my advice would be that writers check their contract and take the active steps required to sever relationship with the company and retieve publicaton rights.

Companies going into bankrupcy cannot normally dispose of their assets, (like publication rights.) These become the property of their creditors. You can see why the law is wrtten that way.

So the writer should take the initiative. It is to be hoped her contract allows rights to be retreived upon notification or after a lapse of time, without agreement or acknowledgement from the publisher.

No big, probably. But the letter of notification from the author will clean up the rights question when it's time to shop the ms again. A letter from MGP may not, because of the bankrupcy.
