How easy is it to obtain a gun in the state of New Hampshire? I have to assume it's pretty easy with the state motto: 'Live Free or Die.'

This is the sort of thing Google lives for.

I'm pretty sure you have to have a permit in order to have a gun. But the motto has nothing to do with whether or not one has the right to bear arms.

um, yeah. :)

we try not to give' em out like jelly beans just because it's our motto. or at least to the toddlers.

more, it supposedly means we try not to legislate common sense. you know. like we NH people are smart enough, we don't need the gov't telling us what to do.

:)Soapbox:) sorry.

well. that's the theory at least. it doesn't actually ever seem to work out that way, though. but, that's the theory. but hey. no sales tax here. so that's good.

I didn't mean to disparage the motto or those who cling to it; I meant that often freedom in this country also means carrying firearms.

Understood, but the government would rather take one's rights away if it meant that the citizens would be safe...or at least safer; such as not letting anyone carry a gun around in public, haha.

well, I guess I interpret it as freedom means being able to decide for ourselves whether we should carry a firearm. Not the actual carrying of them.

meaning in NH we all don't carry guns or advocate it, but our motto upholds the belief that we're given the right to decide, obviously within reason--no toddlers ;)... hence live free or die.

Our state also doesn't tell people over 18 to wear helmets or buckle up, either. Here, you are free to be as stupid as you like. Now that is freedom. :)

I love my state, as wacky as it is. I'm glad you got your links--no disparagement taken. Enough politics for me, phew. back to the business of writing!! :)

If I remember correctly, I don't think the NH motto has anything to do with the constitution and our "rights". I think it was created during the revolutionary war against the Brits, and in turn, the birth of the motto. I may be wrong, but I'm just trying to remember what I learned in HS. I'm going to look this info up later on tonight and post back.

Yep. Nothing to do with the constitution. Connected to rights only in the idea of freedom. If I remember correctly, it was a quote from General John Stark, sometime in 1800's. something along the lines of death is preferable to not being free.

Boy. It's been years since I had learn all that. eek.
