Agents

Hi,

I'm a newbie here, with my first two picture book manuscripts completed. I want to get the right agent in my corner right from the beginning, but I'm not sure who the best children's agents are. Writers House looks like about the best agency for juvenile literature out there, but I'm looking for more specific info on some of the agents there, specifically Stephen Malk, Amy Berkower, and Merrilee Heifetz. Do any of their other agents specialize in children's? And are there any other excellent children's agencies out there?

Agentquery is good but also check out the Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market book. Not only does it have listings of all the publishers and agencies...it also gives advice on how to go about getting published.

I can't tell you about the rest of them, but if you have specific questions about Steven Malk (and yes, it's Steven, not Stephen!) I might be able to help. So go ahead and PM me if you'd like. He's my mother's agent, and he is beyond phenomenal. I mean literally AMAZING. (And you're right, Writer's House in general is the cream of the crop for children's lit.) My mother actually dedicated her last book to Steven (oh, and Donna, her editor). She claims it's just good form once you've gotten a fair bit of work published, but I choose to believe she is just a big old Steven Malk fangirl.

Come to think of it.. I might not be thaaaaat helpful because after my mum told me what he secured for an advance for Lane Smith's John Paul George & Ben, I became a fangirl too. I typically have to restrain myself from squealing when I catch him on the phone looking for my mother... I'm so lame...
