I just got the new Entertainment Weekly Fall Movie Preview issue. There are a lot of good movies coming out! I went through and added most of them to my Netflix (which is now up to 188 movies!).

I'm looking forward to the new Jodie Foster, The Brave One, 3:10 to Yuma w/Christian Bale and Russell Crowe and We Own the Night (b/c of Joaquin of course). There were so many I can't remember.

Anything you're looking forward to coming out?

Pan's Labyrinth... I caught part of it the other night on cinemax but didn't watch it cause I wanted to get the whole story. So am eagerly waiting for it to show again.

30 Days of Night looks pretty cool from the trailer. As much as I can't stand Josh Hartnett I will probably see it.

I want to see the new Halloween but will most likely wait for video.

I want to see that too. I haven't heard much about it yet.

Wild Hogs. It has been a long time since I went or rented a movie.

I'm looking forward to Control, a bio-pic about Ian Curtis, the lead singer from Joy Division.

3:10 to Yuma.

Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

No Country for Old Men.

What childeroland said. 3:10 to Yuma-really, you could put Russell Crowe and Christian Bale together in a remake of The Banana Splits and I'd see it. No Country for Old Men: The Coen Brothers do Cormac McCarthy? Kind of a weird combo, but I definitely want to see that.

The new David Cronenberg movie, Eastern Promises. The new Julie Taymor Beatles movie, although more to see what she did with it than for the music. Shekhar Kapur's "not-a-sequel" Elizabeth pic with Cate Blanchett (again).

Shoot 'em Up, maybe. The Wes Anderson pic. Gone Baby Gone; I'll see pretty much anything set in Boston, among other reasons. American Gangster, Beowulf, I Am Legend, The Savages, There Will Be Blood. Probably The Seeker, and possibly The Water Horse; I'm a sucker for kids' fantasy.

And, possibly above all else, The Golden Compass.

I was looking forward to David Lynch's Inland Empire on DVD, but watched it last night and found it overlong and sometimes a chore to get through, despite some interesting, as usual, Lynchian things.

Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

Strange, I saw the preview to this movie two years ago (I think; it could have been longer). Either it's been in the can awhile or there were some issues they were trying to work out.

The Jerry Seinfeld movie, Bee Movie, has also been around forever. I saw the trailer at least two years ago for that one, and it comes out this fall.

And I'm with you: cannot wait to see the return of the Coen brothers. IIRC, it'll be their first film since O Brother, Where Art Thou?* (Though they did write Intolerable Cruelty and at least one of them helped on Bad Santa, two films I found utterly hilarious.) This film looks like it's a return to Fargo-land, which is exciting to say the least.

* Just checked IMDB, and it looks like I forgot about The Man Who Wasn't There, another very solid film.**

** I'm rambling now, but Billy Bob is good in just about anything. Anybody see the movie Crystal? Unbelievable film. It was my favorite movie of 2006.

Also, Doomsday (although that's not until next year)

Nothing comes to mind so far. But then again, I haven't seen the line-up yet. There are no must-see blockbusters or Oscar-baits so far.

Nothing intrigues me. It's all sequels, adaptations of books I haven't read/have read and didn't like, or remakes. Again.

The studio recut 'Assassination' (or made the director do it) ala Warners with 'Invasion' after some negative test screenings. I know one shouldn't really judge from trailers, but the previews for this film look phenomenal. This film looks like a cult thing to me, like Malick's work, but then I love Malick, so...

Love in the times of Cholera

Spielberg and Jackson's Tintin adaptation

The Golden Compass

The live action Neon Genesis Evangelion Movie (I know it is quite possible that is going to be lame, but still...)

Sodenbergh's Guerrilla

Aside from all those new fantasy films (Golden Compass, Stardust, Seeker...), probably Vatanen's Hare.

French film, supposed to happen in Canada, filmed in Bulgary, starring Christopher Lambert, and based (sort of loosely, it seems) on a Finnish novel, Arto Paasilinna's The Year of the Hare. Arto Paasilinna's stories are in so many ways so very Finnish that it will be interesting to see how his story is seen by the French.

Hm. I should probably read the novel before I see that film. I have read it, but that was so long ago that I don't actually remember all that much. Apart from the fact that the character Vatanen doesn't exactly resemble the characters Lambert usually plays.

Naw, that's just a bit of a myth, Rose. They'll never get around to making that.

I wonder if Spielberg is going to mix elements from various Tintin stories the way he was going to with Harry Potter.

Jackson adapting 'Red Rackham' and/or 'Unicorn' would be an awesome thing to see.

As far as I know is going to be a trilogy; so I see it in this way

Tintin in America
Cigars of the Pharaon
The Blue Lotus

the second film:

The Crab with the golden Craws
The Secret of the Unicorn
The Teasure of Red Rackham

The third film:

The whole two issues about the moon trip

I really hope that I am wrong and can include more books; but they can do anything they can as long is a good adaptaion as faithful as Sin City

Yeah they would never find a guy that would debase himself enough to play Shinji.

For those interested, I just came back from a screening and liked it. Didn't adore it, but I was entertained every minute. I would pitch it most to Western fans, obviously, not just because of the basic setting, but also because the parameters and tropes are within that genre.

No spoilers here, just thematic jibber-jabber...

It's got a Deadwood-light mix of realistic violence and dark comedy. There were many moments when the audience was laughing, but all were intentional—which is, I think, a good thing. Next minute, someone's getting a head bashed in, or a not-pretty bullet-wound to the stomach. But those tones shifted pretty easily. Not nearly as good as Deadwood, so don't take that comparison too far. But it does have that odd mix that works.

It's a predictable storyline, but it's also a Western that presents a combination of moral ambivalence mixed with moral certainty. On the one hand, it has a Silence of the Lambs model, in that the murderous villain [Russell Crowe] is a very *bad* man who is charming. And, of course, the audience wants him to get away with his dastardly deeds (excellent casting there). Hence the ambiguity.

On the other hand, Christian Bale's lead character has a sense of morality that is more akin to us non-homicidal types. It's clear he is the moral authority, yet our sympathies are pulled around the canvas. The aura of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven hovers over the first two-thirds or so of the film, in that there's a lingering message in the air about the choice between killing and not killing, what it means to kill, etc.

In the end, I'd classify it as more of a popcorn Western than a meaningful one, but it had enough nods to better efforts that I was glad to have seen it. Generally speaking, the casting was excellent. Completely thankless, inconsequential roles for the female characters, but they're incidental to this particular story.

I'm dying to see Beowulf, so much so that I'll probably go opening weekend (which means I'll have been to two movies on opening weekend this year, something I'd never done before in my entire life.) If the movie's half as good as the theater trailer, it's going to be amazing.

I'll definitely be seeing National Treasure 2 and The Golden Compass as well.

Really, 2007 has been just amazing for movies all the way around. It seems like every other week something's coming out that I want to see. Usually entire years go by with only one or two movies worth seeing in the theater, but I've probably been to the theater 30 times this year (with more times to come, it looks like).

Oh, and Silent Hill 2 is coming out sometime next year. The original is my all-time favorite horror movie, so I'll be seeing that one for sure.

:hooray: I haven't played the games, but I adored the first film. I love how they used prosthetics instead of all CGI. Now I have to hunt down info on this sequel. Woohoo!

I'm such a sucker for a charming villain. Especially one with a gunbelt slung on his hips. *fans herself*

Iron Man. I just learned it was coming out! Granted I think Robert Downey Jr. is a complete loser, but I think the costume action scenes should be kickin.

Don't care for Yuma.

Beowulf looks interesting (the motion-capture is just weird... watching an animated Angelina Jolie is plain bizarre -- Ray Winstone must be ecstatic to be portrayed as a He-Man...).

The Kite Runner in November.

National Treasure -- the first one was kind of fun without the Da Vinci Code's stuffiness.

Hoping to see the Avatar: The Last Airbender Live-Action movie! I know, I am such a geek...

And there is also the latest Terry Gilliam project that is having problems since one of the main characters was played by Heath Ledger (R.I.P).

Poor Gilliam, seems that the destiny doesn't want him to make films...
