I just had an agent ask for the first three chapters from an e-mailed query. She wants me to send them to her snail mail, along with a synopsis. She didn't say anything about a SASE. Do I need to send one? I think I would, but I wanted to make sure.

I received a partial request this morning that said to only include a SASE if you do NOT want to hear back via email, but including one anyway couldn't hurt.

Hey, congrats!!!!!

I do include a SASE in my snail mail partials, plus the query (edited to reflect that they requested the partial), and I send it with delivery confirmation. It's about 65 cents but it is invaluable for my neurotic tendencies (no one has to sign for it, the post office updates status on the website).

Good luck!!!!!

Hey--

I was in this exact situation and didn't send one, and I'm just kicking myself for it now.

Ah well.

ETA: I always thought bad news came back in those SASE, however after opening up one recently, which by the way I sometimes let them sit about 2 weeks, I discovered some very good news--really threw me as I thought they'd email or call--so I guess there are no hard straight rules on any of this--or so I'm beginning to think ;)

So far, after requesting partials, I've had 2 agents ask for fulls via snail mail (in the SASE I sent) and only one via email.

If she asks for a hard copy, send an SASE. Chances are she may just email you one way or another, but I think it's good practice to include SASE in all your snail mail correspondence.

Thanks everyone. You answered another one of my questions about whether to include the query letter updated about them requesting material.

Agents have gotten hip to the fact that everyone has their own printer, and many would rather send their MS "no return, no deposit," mostly because you want to send a crisp, new MS each time, not a dog-eared copy that's obviously been around the block a few times.

So, while the rest of the world figures out ways to conserve our precious resources, we writers (as a group, at least) have added a new way to waste paper... And before anyone starts feeling guilty, remember how tiny a percentage of the total population writers comprise.

Send her a twenty dollar bill. Works every time.
