Just wondering how many screenwriters here live or have moved to California to pursue screenwriting. I live in upstate NY and don't know anyone in the business, and wonder I'll do when I finish my script.

LA, unfortunately.
Funny Raven =)

I moved to LA to go to college (film school) and stayed here ever since. I meant to move back to Boston when I graduated but I started dating a fella out here (still together). But now we're both trying to move back to the East Coast, slowly but surely...

I moved out to work in production, had a job set up before I came out. Switched over to the writing side of the game.

Some of my classmates stayed in the Midwest and are making the most of their opportunities there - writing, directing, and producing their own plays, making short films and posting them on youtube. Their local success has brought them notice and, in once case, a bona fide Hwd agent.

Since you're relatively close to NYC, you may find a creative base there, though the City's so expensive these days that lots of artists can't afford to live there. There are probably small cities upstate, college towns especially, which have strong acting corps and theater people who'd love to crew on a short film.

Seanie Blue has put up a number of good posts about steering clear of the Hollywood hamster wheel, and making your own opportunities. Also worth consideration.

I'm a composer. My studio is right in downtown Hollywood but I live 35 miles north, in the aptly named Thousand Oaks. That's how I ended up writing a novel; I commute so much that I read tons of books on tape, it was only a matter of time before I tried to write one myself.

LA is great for professional music work; you can rent almost any instrument or piece of equipment at any time of the day or night and the studio musicians are the best in the world, but if dense foliage and strongly defined seasons are your bag, this isn't the place.

Plenty of dense foliage up in the Pac. Northwest! (Of course, if you don't like months of gray and rainy days, you may be better off in Cali.)

I just moved up here from San Diego. (Yes, you can laugh at me!)

So. California is a very busy place. In S.D, if you are driving on the freeway doing 75mph in the slow lane, you can expect to have someone honking their horn at you because you are not going fast enough! (And they don't want to change lanes!) You can also expect to hear a lot of griping from people waiting in any sort of line. (Standing in line drives Cali's batty!)

But it isn't all bad. You do get sunny weather, palm trees, beaches, Disneyland, etc. etc..
