Does anyone have a good resource for the terminology of book formats for old-school publishing? Specifically, I'm wondering what those double-feature pocket-sized pulp fiction novels were called. The kind that had two books back to back, but the text flipped in the middle, so each book could be read from the beginning with its own separate cover. I think they used to do this in the 20's and 30's. I saw some G-Man adventure stories in a museum in DC that were published like this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ace Doubles. Does anybody remember the Little Big Books? They were as I recall about 4 inches in diameter, but very fat. I haven't seen one in many years.

We've still got a bunch of those books. Fahim's collection. :) And yeah, Ace Double Novels. Fahim has links to pages that show the covers if you like.

Yes please :)

Now that I think about it, I think they were Big Little Books. Some had flip animation pictures on the page corners.

In the windmill of my mind…
I’ve heard them called dime novels… something might come up online if you Google that term. Always makes me think of westerns, detective novels, those potboilers [eg The Chair for Martin Rome] from the 40s/50s with those really lurid covers… they’d get made into film noirs with great names like Build My Gallows High or I Cover the Waterfront, starring Robert Mitchum… Richard Conte… Paul Muni… Dana Andrews… Ida Lupino… Gene Tierney…

Feeling all nostalgic now. They don’t make ‘em like they used to… ;)
