Query Question or Two

Here's my thought, based on perusing agent blogs:

I don't think you have to let the agents know it's a simultaneous sub, unless they request the info (say, on the agency Web site). Many agents, if not most, probably assume you are querying other agents.

If you want to include the info, I'd place it toward the bottom. Your idea is fine, but you could also put it where you say you're seeking representation OR with the title, genre, and word count info.

I have seen many cover letters for picture book manuscripts, but as an editor rather than an agent; the best letters say 'here is my 32-page picture book for your consideration. I enclose a SAE for your response. Please feel free to recycle the manuscript if you wish. Yours truly, etc.' An agent might want more information, but not much more, I reckon.

I've always wondered how the agents would know if you had told them the truth about simultaneous submissions. I mean, unless they offer you representation, what difference does it make? So, therefore, I don't worry about it unless someone shows some interest. But don't tell the agents I said so....

Actually, the editor community is relatively small, and such things as a book showing up on several desks can happen. From what I've read by agents, however, it's not the faux pas it used to be. As a matter of polite form, it might be a good idea to check The Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market listings to see if any agents you've selected shun simultaneous submissions.
