Romances of course, but do you enjoy the historicals, contemporaries, highlanders, vampires, etc etc?

I have a thing for historicals, especially the ones dealing with like Scotland. I enjoy a GOOD vampire one too, but I've never really found more than a handful of good ones like that. At least ones that I like. I like contemporary ones too, but the themes I enjoy (like marriage of convenience for instance) are found more in historical romances.

On the other hand, I write contemporary. I've never been that great at history and the idea of all the research that would go into a historical isn't something that I'd be good at lol. Maybe later if I make something of myself...I dunno. I'll stick to contemporary for now.

What about you?

I'm not a romance writer, but I'll read anything with vampires.

Lorreign, you say you like novels set in Scotland; I'm assuming you've read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books? (First one in the series is called Cross Stitch in the UK).

I really enjoy reading/writing paranormal and urban fantasy, but I confess that my first love will always be historical romance. I'm actually going to send a historical proposal in to my agent and see how she likes it.

After I get all the other ideas out of my head, of course...

I have heard of the outlander series, but have never had the pleasure of reading them. I'll have to see if my local library has any copies next time I go.

Hi Guys,
I must add that I too love romance--all things Johanna Lindsay, thank you very much. I haven't read any in a bit because I've been busy writing and such. Though, after this fantasy i'm working on is complete I'm gonna take a breath and read, read, read! I can't wait.

I used to own every book by Johanna Lindsey (well, not her last two) and then I loaned out four of the best ones to a friend, never got those back...and after reading all the best ones, I've decided to sell my entire collection. It's on ebay right now actually. But anyway, she's had some good ones...but I think eventually you read so many by the same author that in your mind they start losing quality. Not to mention, and this is my opinion, that Captive of My Desires was about as good as Captive Bride in quality...looks like she is starting to lose the edge. I haven't read The Devil Who Tamed her yet, I'm really skeptical of it.

Prisoner of My Desire is my favorite of hers without a doubt.

I haven't read her for years now. I hoping I find her as entertaining as I remember. But, sometimes memories are a lot better then reality.;)

What kind of romance do you like to read?

I have always preferred historical romance to contemporary, though I do occasionally read the latter. My main interest is the ancient world but I am happy to read books set in any period as long as they have a convincing feel. What I don't like are the history as wallpaper types.

As for writing, definitely historical.

Paranormal or romantic suspense...almost exclusively...once in a while I'll pick up a historical but usually only from certain authors.

Anything with a vampire is good! :)

I write romantic suspense...among other things.

I like fantasy, historicals, suspense, paranormals...and science fiction, whenever anyone writes any more!

Writing-wise: SFF and paranormal.

I love vampires and werewolves (as long as they stay away from the whole lifemate thing, which is used too much as a cop-out to actual love) and fantasy romances. I also like romantic suspense and Regency, although I like more realistic Regency where the women don't f*ck the hero the moment they see him.

I write paranormal and fantasy romances.

I read just about everything, but I'm an historical lover (and a huge Lindsey fan, so I share in the disappointment of her last few books.) Frankly, I love her earlier works but A Loving Scoundrel almost got thrown across the room and I couldn't finish Prisoner of My Desire.

I write mostly historicals, but I do have one WIP that's a contemporary (category length) and I have two erotic romances in progress that are contemporary. But, I've got three more historicals rattling around in my brain and in prelim files on my laptop, so I always wander back.

I don't get to read as much, and I find that when I do sit down to read, I don't enjoy it nearly as much as I used to. I read like a writer and not a reader, which sucks out the fun. Guess if I ever get a free moment again, I'll have to retrain myself to read as a reader...

^ I totally get that, reading like a writer. I asked my friend once was I just too critical these days cause the last books I'd read, I'd always find something that I didn't like about it. Like for instance, I read Twilight and loved it, but thought that the conflict could have been bigger. But I believe that is actually a good thing. Decide what they did wrong so you can do it right.

I recently started reading Feehan's Dark Series and was immediately intrigued when I started reading Dark Prince, but then I started criticizing it and I'm afraid I'll never be able to read any more of the series because I'd worry that it would have the same flaws I saw in the first one. Bah.

I actually don't read many romances except historicals set in Tudor England or earlier. Usually, though, I read horror, some suspense/thriller, humor. I like books like 'The Autobiography of Henry VIII' or 'I, Cleopatra'. I don't like werewolves or vampires (not scary enough for me). I love good, creepy haunted houses--my absolute favorites. I grew up with the old gothic romances my grandmother and mother used to read.

I write fantasy, sci-fi and paranormal romances. I'm too lazy to do historical research.

I'm a slow reader and a slow writer :(

Love paranormal/urban fantasy to read and to write...but have only written one novel and one novella with regard to paranormal.

I also like romance suspense to read, the longer contemporary ones, and paranormal mystery romance cross genre to write!!

When I have time and arent writing other straight romances mostly to see how my writing is with them--I want to get back to paranormal. By that time there probably won't be any market for them!! well, maybe

I do like a paranormal historical romance once in a while to read, don't write them

:)

Paranormal/urban fantasy or romantic suspense for me. Got to have that edge--danger to life and limb to keep me interested. ;)

Ditto for the Ninja Bunny. Prefer teeth and/or claws, but when I can't get those, I'll settle for nail-biting action. Things that go bump in the night, criminals with an agenda, particularly ornery men... anything really, so long as there is a (strong) plot happening outside of the romantic involvement. I like it when the love grows out of the circumstances, not when the circumstances grow out of the love.

I write on the blurred line between paranormal romance and urban fantasy. I haven't yet decided which genre I'm going to go with, and neither have my characters. I'm hoping they'll let me know soon...

Suspense, it has to have suspense! It can be paranormal, fantasy, thriller, any of those romances as long as it has the elements of suspense. . .I'm in.

I've always been a history buff, so grew up reading historicals. As I got older, though, it was harder and harder to suspend disbelief on the gender politics--once you read several hundred of books where the couple is an "exception" who marry for love and not practical concerns, and the hero is the "exception" who treats the heroine as an equal, you tend to get cynical...

And that's why I write gay romance. :)

I like ones in an original fantasy setting (preferably with mages, dragons, mercenaries, and arranged marriages), science fiction ones as long as they are not bdsm or gritty and depressing, and historicals (preferably with fantasy elements and without torture or religion or rampant machoism). I generally don't read anything with a modern setting or anything which doesn't have sex scenes. If I could get them I would read only gay male romances, but they're hard to find outside of fanfiction.

Romantic comedy and historicals. And I write what I read. Usually. ;)

I got an idea for a mystery and I'm still working out if I can or want to try a genre that I'm not that familar with.
