Oh, boy. Another children's publishing juggernaut . . .

Wait, I don't get it. Boyd's Mills Press is really respected and has been around for quite awhile. Do you not like them or something?

Acquisitions and mergers rarely happen without some loss of blood and loss of soul, and if Highlights for Children (the parent corporation) can pull it off with neither, then it would be a wonderful thing.

At least they're still open to submissions.

I thought Highlights already owned Boyd Mills?
They founded Boyd's Mills, and Boyd's Mills appears to have acquired Front Street and Lemniscaat.

We've all seen too many small and independent imprints disappear, so let's hope Highlights can hold onto the empire they're building and resist the temptation to sell it to some media conglomerate.

I like small and independent publishers, but I like conglomerates, too. Bigger sometimes really is a good thing.

Ah. I knew I was missing something. I wasn't aware they aquired Front Street. Doh!

On the plus side, Highlights are lovely people to deal with. I hope that extends to the aquired publishers.

Jeesh, Joe. This is old news. I may have the dates wrong but Boyds Mills acquired Front Street a good couple of years ago. At least. Not much has changed as a result either.

I just checked. It was 2004.

They were keeping it a secret until recently. A few months ago, Front Street's submission guidelines still gave the old Asheville, NC address and email query link, and the About page didn't mention any ties to Boyd's Mills.

Wasn't much of a secret if I knew about it. I first read it in the SCBWI bulletin way back in 2005, I think. Transitions take time but that doesn't mean they're hiding anything.

Stephen Roxburgh (Front Street's founder and publisher) took over Kent Brown's duties at Boyds Mills a long time ago. That was a good solid year after the acquisition. It's no secret.
