I've a few screenplays ready to go and am seeking an agent or manager but have heard so much about age discrimination in Hollywood it makes me reluctant to try. I can cope with rejection if the script is not considered viable but to be told I'm too old to write anything worthwhile would be hard to swallow.

What's your take?

"I'm 49 years old. Admittedly, I could get away with 44, 41, maybe 38. But when you hit 50 they don't hire you anymore. It's like they can smell 50." ~Steve Martin, Bowfinger

Don't sweat it, those young whippersnappers who have less life experience than your toenail clippings are only interested in reading good scripts, not your birth certificate.

I'm just saying, you might want to take a peek at this thread on the DD board: The Futility of Pursuing an Agent ...which is a realistic insider look at the agent situation. The thread title speaks for itself, so be prepared for disappointment.

And if you haven't already, check out the screenwriting tips thread which contains info plus links that you may find useful, including how to obtain contact & query submission info for prodcos, agents and managers.

Welcome to the forum!

LA, unfortunately.
One of the plus sides of being a writer is that they see your work before they see you. If you work is good enough, they won't care what you look like.

age discrimination comes into play for tv writers. you're hired to write, not selling a script. tv writers usually work in teams and must go to work in an office/conference room and work with other (like) writers every day.

if you're writing features then don't worry about it.

That's been my impression as well. If I send someone a well written story, by the time I'm sitting in a conference room with them they won't really care how old I am.
