So I woke up this morning to discover that the notorious Mrs. Giggles had reviewed my recently released novel, One Night in Boston. Knowing what she typically says on her site, I read the review with one eye closed.

Good thing, too, since she tore it apart. Really. She hated my heroine with a vengeance. In fact, she went on and on about how much she hated the heroine. If you want to read the whole miserable thing, it's here (Warning: some plot spoilers, though):

http://www.mrsgiggles.com/books/boniface_boston.html

In the end, though, she also managed to be sort of complimentary and said, "Make no mistake, I recognize that under any other circumstances, I will love One Night In Boston. It can be a shamelessly manipulative story at times, but Ms Boniface's writing style is such that I can be easily persuaded to let her play me like a violin. The author takes the trouble to explain her characters' emotions so that I have a good idea what is happening inside her characters' heads. As a result, I find these characters pretty memorable. What I'm trying to say is that this book affects me, which is the reason why I grade this book pretty high despite my problem with the heroine."

Then she gave it a 73 overall, which I'll take.

I thought getting rejection letters back from agents and editors was tough, but I'm finding that reading what other people have to say about your novel once it's published is way more stressful.

Oh, well.

Ah, Ms Allie Boniface, don't even worry about it. I didn't read the review. I don't have to. It probably consisted of a blow by blow synopsis of the plot, and a discussion of the characters as if they were real people, along the lines of "if I was the heroine I would never have been so stupid/insensitive/ desperate/pathetic/etc". Am I right? The "I'm just a reader, and here's my opinion" type reviews are a lot of fun to read, but they rarely review or comment on actual writing skill or talent as a story teller. Mrs Giggles actually complimented your writing style? Take the compliment. Pat yourself on the back. Move on.

I read the review and I'm laughing, in a good way. Now, my book is not published, but after several betas all came back with comments like: "I hate your main character, she's a real needy, manipulative bitch, can't you just kill her?", that review gave me a fit of giggles.

She gave you some very good compliments. You should focus on that. In fact, save the review to a word document, and change all the bad text to white, and then read it again.

A 73 isn't too bad. Feel proud it didn't earn a 33. Heaven knows there are plenty of those on her site.

She recently reviewed one of ours and gave it a 76. Didn't like the heroine, didn't like the situation or the dialogue, but LOVED the world. Hey, at least she liked part of it, y'know?

I haven't read that particular review, but I do have to comment about this. When I reviewed books for All About Romance, I did write some reviews where part of my review was about how the characters to each other. I don't think I was discussing them as if they were real people but rather explaining why those characters didn't (or did) work for me. Characters are the most important part of the book, and if they act like idiots, it's hard to avoid bringing that up in the review. :D That doesn't mean I want them to be paragons, but I want to believe that they will act a particular way.

I have to take a stand for reader reviews here. Most of the reader reviews I've read are very detailed, as least if by reader reviews you include sites such as AAR and The Romance Reader, as well as many of the romance blogs. (Have you read the reviews in Rosario's blog for example?) There is also a reader on AARlist2 who posts incredibly detailed responses to the books she reads, especially Lavyrle Spencer books. (I don't know why I haven't suggested that she start a blog.) Many readers are very good at saying why something didn't work.

From my personal experience, when I reviewed for AAR, I couldn't just go on about how stupid the characters were. I had to explain how they were stupid, explain the grade, etc. The reviews were all edited, sometimes by more than one person. Also, every reviewer has different things that bug them. Some will talk about writing style more than others. I tend to harp on headhopping and author intrusion, as well as awkward writing; others will notice bad research.

Actually a 73 from Mrs. Giggles is pretty good. :) I'm not a fan of her reviews anyway because I don't mind a lot of the things that bug her, and vice versa. But her essays often have interesting things to say. Even when she goes over-the-top, she often has a point on certain issues.

P.S. Besides, aren't we all readers? :D

Actually, the review didn't really bother me as much as I thought it might. Overall she's got some good stuff buried in the "I wish your heroine would just die" comments. It's definitely interesting to see how different people view your work!

I adore Mrs. Giggles. There are very few people on the Internet I enjoy reading as much as I enjoy her. Mainly because she's not afraid to give people low scores and tell them exactly why she scored them that way. She provides a really invaluable service, and I wish more people would see that and appreciate it for what it is. If only because she explains where she's coming from.

But then, I find my opinions pretty much almost always align with hers, so maybe I'm biased.

Full Disclosure: She's reviewed 2 of my books and given them pretty high scores. So maybe I'll change my tune if (when?) she tears me apart.

I like Mrs Giggles. She's a reader with an opinion, I don't see what's wrong with that. Not everyone will love any book but I get a kick out of anyone reading it and thinking about it enough to write a review.

I was going to say the same thing, a 73 is pretty good, especially from her and especially if she hated the heroine. She must have really liked everything else, if that helps!

Yup. We're all just readers, and if it weren't for reader reviews, well, what reviews would there be? Reviews of romance novels in mainstream media? I wish. I think AAR does a good job of reviews on the whole, though my criticism of their criticism remains the same: too much rehash of plot, too much emphasis on how much they liked/disliked the characters, not enough emphasis on writing style/skill/voice, and not enough criticism of bad writing. I find Mrs Giggles, and similar blogs, highly amusing, but somewhat shallow in their reviews. I'd like to see a more literary type of criticism - somewhere at least. I know that statement will cause a few giggles. I'm giggling myself, but I'm also serious. There's a lot of fine writers in the romance genre, and they deserve something more deeply thought out than snark - no matter how witty. I'll check out the AARList2, and thanks for the link to Rosario. Does anyone know of any sites that do a more literary review? And (apologies to AllieB. if I'm going too far off topic) does anyone else feel that criticism (as opposed to reviews) would be good for the genre?

Mrs Giggles used to be fun and provocative and people even liked to glean quotes out of her opinions for book covers but those days are long behind her.
This is true of most review situations now, sadly. The days of reviewers having much influence with readers are mostly by gone, IMHO. The point is to get your name on as many sites or in as many mags and newspapers as possible, what they say doesn't matter that much. A whole lot of people remember seeing the title but don't recall what was said.

Disclosure: I've had one good and one bad review from Mrs. G, but the bad one - well, she clearly didn't read the book. I don't mind a bland review when the reveiwer hasn't read it, (and I mean really, really did NOT read it, nost just got points wrong, it was like she looked at the back copy and went on a diatribe about something up that got up her behind totally unrealted to the story) but to rip someone's book on things that clearly were not in the book? Sloppy at the very least. Of course, that book went on to win awards and so on, so I felt vindicated.

I only read her reviews occasionally, but one time I actually learned an important lesson when she discussed how bland a villain was in a book she read. I realized that the one in my WIP wasn't fully realized, and it lead to a mindblowing (for me, obviously!) idea that I immediately incorporated. So I feel I want to give her credit for that. I think I learn more from reviews about how to write sometimes than from any how-to book.

Allie, I'm glad you're not too bothered about it. "This book affects me" is one of the best compliments an author can get. Being memorable is no easy feat, particularly when a reviewer reads as much as Mrs. Giggles does. (I've just read 65 books in about as many days and I think there are maybe two that I'd say are memorable.) So... way to go!

Mrs. Giggles is ruthless, but we seem to want her opinion anyway. :) 73 is a very good review from her, though. I read the review and I must admit, when my time comes--if there is one--, I'm praying that she's compassionate with me. My biggest fear is that she will look at my story and say, "Good God! What is this crap?" The fact that she said your story was memorable is a good thing along with her reply that she liked the gist of your story.

I've learned over the years that you can't please everyone all the time. I've had a scathing review for one of my stories before and chalked it up to experience. I would take this unbiased review and run with it. :D

FWIW-- I openly submit our books to the slaughter. ;) I've mailed her an ARC of our books ever since I discovered that she had a hard time finding them at her local store. And no, I'm not revealing the name or location of "Mrs. Giggles." :D
