Well can I continue this thread? I was debating going, but I was also debating becoming a member. Does anyone have thoughts, have they been to the convention, are they a member, benefits etc?

My real life writer friends found out I wasn't planning on going and looked at me like I was some kind of hideous alien.

Thus, I'm trying to make arrangements.

Argh, I want to go to World Fantasy. I also want to go to Wiscon, Minicon, and 4th Street next year.

These things are not happening, at least not all of them. :sob:

Is Fourth Street still happening? I figured they were dead, & that's why Minicon got Harlan Ellison in 2006 (& still managed to only draw a few hundred attendees -- sad, really).

But look me up at CONvergence & maybe ValleyCon. Heck, I oughta just sponsor a WNet/AWrite room party.

I think part of why Minicon is cool is that it's tiny, and literature-oriented. They often have excellent GOHs; they had Charles Vess and Charles DeLint this year.

Fourth Street died but is being re-started as of next year.

I'll be at World Fantasy -- all I need to do at this point is book plane tickets. Which I should probably do soon...

The bad thing is, I can really only justify one east-of-the-Rockies con a year. So I'm thinking next year it should be Fourth Street Fantasy. But I'd really like to go to Wiscon sometime.

Anybody want to publish a novel and obligate me to go to more conventions? :D

Rugcat, I don't know how much of a presence I have in the fantasy field. That's one of the reasons why I'm going. Because HELL'S BELLES was published as "paranormal romance," I have been doing a lot in the romance community, but unfortunately did very little elsewhere. So I have a feeling a lot of people at the conference will be like, "You do what again?"

:scared:

So I'm terrified. Won't stop me from going. But if you're there, and you see a short woman (like, five-foot-nothing) with short brown hair looking like she may barf on your feet, that's probably me.

Lots of crossover these days. Half of the urban fantasy these days could easily be termed paranormal romance, and vice-versa. How it's marketed depends mostly on your publisher.

I think the real distinction comes in whether there are more pages devoted to the sex than the plot.

And when you write about a succubus who's slumming as an exotic dancer, the distinction blurs even more...

I'll be there. It's definitely worth joining because a) you can go into the dealers' room, art show, and panels where you can meet cool people, b) you get a bag full of free books, and c) you get a name tag with your name on it, so that you will start getting free name recognition.

This is also going to be a really terrific WFC to go to since it's so close to NYC, and I hear that there will be more than the usual number of agent/editor types there.

And, for those of you who write paranormal romance, there are several urban fantasy/paranormal mystery people who are attending, including Charlaine Harris and Lilith Saintcrow. If you have books out or about to be out, you can bring flyers/bookmarks/giveaways to put out on the freebie table too.

Just got email from Darrell at WFC. Here's the deal: registering for the conference makes you a member. This is separate from registering for the hotel, which is indeed filling up.

Okay, happy-dance squee for me, because my second book launches on November 6, and this conference is literally just before it.

You want to purchase a WFC membership. Definitely not the same as registering at the hotel--especially since there are a number of hotels being used. Yes, it's $150, but remember, it's tax deductible!

Redhedd, the thing that confused me was I wasn't clear that by registering for the conference, that made me a member of the WFC. I get it now. Yay!

Toothpaste, you should go. You know you wanna.

Come on. PLEEEEZE go!

I'll buy your book if you go.

(Heck, I'll buy it anyway. Damn, there goes my leverage...)

There is a limited number of memberships, but I don't think it's that limited. On the other hand, several of the hotels have already sold out, so I'd move on that quickly.

I don't know whether to be excited or terrified. The anthology containing my (so far) one published story is due out at WFC. The publisher will be there. I think the editor will be there too. I'm going to be obligated to introduce myself.

Sometimes being an X-treme introvert just doesn't pay, I'm tellin' ya.

Here's a question for people who are going: How are you getting there.

Expedia tells me there's no discount airfare to Saratoga Springs. Anybody thinking of a car pool buddy from a different airport?

I admit I sing along to the radio, but only if I like the music.
