I was checking out Rod Serling's (twilight zone's brainfather) bio when I found out he co-wrote Planet of the Apes. Here's an article on the writing process and its controversies.

LA, unfortunately.
It's kind of a strange article that seeks to say that Serling didn't do anything the critics didn't like and did all the stuff they did like.

But I love Planet of the Apes. I think a lot of people shrug it off without actually seeing it. Shaffner is a great director, whoever the author of the script is did a good solid job (Wilson actually gets the first credit) and it's technically very good. The themes are profound without being preachy. The whole thing is pretty great. I wrote one of my college entrance essays about it. It's too bad people brush it off as campy when it isn't.

If I remember correctly, the movie was based on an obscure book by a French author who wanted to shed some light on class warfare in a parable-like manner. Never read the book, but i love the original movie. I find the remake to be an abomination, though I like Mark Wahlberg as an actor.

I spent an afternoon watching all the Planet of the Apes movies. Part 1 is a classic. Part 2 is okay. The rest should have never been made. The cartoon series was better.

The lunchbox was a major score, but i never got it. I had to pimp my Six-Million-Dollar-Man box for a couple years before switching to paper bags.

AWOOOOOOGAH!

I loved Planet of the Apes. I've read Pierre Boulle's book, but only in English. One day when I have unlimited time, I'm going to read it in French, too.

The other movies were pretty weak, but the original with Charton Heston was a classic. Who can forget "Get your hands off me, you damn dirty ape!" and the final scene?

Also, it inspired a role-playing game called Terra Primate, by Eden Studios.

Agreed - the original Planet of the Apes movie is incredible, and the final scene unforgettable and inspired!

I also loved the kooky sixties music.

Not so much as it's a Serling tribute site. I like that they showed bits of several versions of the draft, though.
