St. Martin's Minotaur is sponsoring a "First Crime Novel" contest. Go here:

http://minotaurbooks.com/competitions.html

It's the first one on the page.

It fits the right requirements: It's by a publisher whose books I've seen on shelves--and bought. Prize is publication.

You have to send an SASE for the rules and the judge you'll submit to--I got mine back today. Rules are the same as the website. It's the name I spent a stamp for.

Anyone else going to enter?

Meybbe. I'm currently entered in the St Martin's/Hillerman...it's the first year for that one. No idea who the judges are though other than they are editors and published authors. I'll take a peek at the Crime guidelines.

I think you should enter!! This is legit.

I know what you mean about agents. But this seems like a rare chance to cut through all of that.

I wish they had an email address. There is no mail service where I live. )Well, there is a government postal system, but...)

It's a real handicap sometimes.

But anyway, I think this is very much worth doing, even though it would cost me around $50 USD to send a manuscript to somebody who hasn't shown any interest in it. They will receive a ton of applications, won't they?

I'm sure they will.

What about FedEx or some other delivery service? Those are pricey, though. But perhaps less than $50--unless you factor in paper and toner. Argh.

Good luck, if you decide to enter!
