Okay, i'm not a Harry Potter purist but my wife has read all six books.

Anyway,

I was perusing the internet and a few folks have claimed to have gotten their hands on the last book of Harry Potter...first of all how did they open the boxs of books when they're under tight security? Or did they pay them off?

My point is, why does someone want to ruin it for those who have spent the last ten or so years reading these books? I just don't understand it

It is just in some people's nature to ruin the fun of others.

I like reading the rumors if that is all it is. Conjecture and supposition. I have my own. It is all in fun.

One thing I will not do is intentionally go to a site where a supposed "real" copy of the book is. I don't want to take that chance.

The next couple of days will find me with very little internet time and cotton stuffed in my ears.

To be honest at this stage, I'd be happy to read a reliable summary. I've read two different rumours by now, one intriguing, one that would disappoint me If I had to read a whole book to discover it.

The trouble with guarding something is that the guards are as likely to steal as anyone else. Then you have millions of books pouring off the presses to be put in boxes. And there are certainly electronic files of the book.

There's advance copies out, and the person in question photographed every page. Unfortunately for him, he also printed the page which gave away which # copy of the book he had, so... if anyone was keeping track, I'd hate to see what $2 Billion in legal retainers can buy.

I don't know if this post will get deleted for this, but if you want to read the book, any bit torrent site will have the photographed pages of the book. A few early chapters are blurred, but everything else is pretty readable. I'll be buying the book anyway, but I visit too many social news sites, and every other comment seems to be a spoiler or faux-spoiler for the book. I can't stay away from the Internets for a week. Also, I just really wanted to read it too >_>

You can PM me if you want any details.

My wife said she's staying away from those spoiler sites until she reads the book.. And it's unfortunate that people like to ruin it for others. I'll let her read it and she can tell me what happens :)

If J.K. Rowling is smart and wants her readers to see the last movie she won't kill Ron or Hermoine (sp)...i'm thinking either Hagrid or maybe Longbottom or Snape..but then again I could be wrong :)

Some people like spoilers and speculation, some just speculation and some don't want to discuss anything until they get the book (or movie) in their hands. Some people read the last page first, some bite their nails waiting in anticipation as they carefully read from the prologue on.

As to why some people want to spoil it for the rest of us. Well, it certainly gets them attention, if nothing else. And it is fun for those who like spoilers.

Have you seen this thread?

I'm avoiding the spoiler sites. My copy is pre-ordered. I'll wait patiently until it comes. Then I'll rip open the box and call in sick to work.

I actually wrote a scathing blog entry last night about the idjit who posted the photographed pages and then the swarm of moroons who threw the spoilers online like confetti. I hope that the term *e-piracy* means something to that butthead...

*grumble, grumble*

That being said, I have avoided potential spoiler sites like the plague. Ive enjoyed the series too much to ruin it for myself now.

Hopefully the book is good enough that it can't be "ruined" by spoilers. If its only value is the surprise, then it has bigger problems than piracy.

I do appreciate the mentality, though, of dedicated readers who refuse to reveal any secrets.

It's not so much the surprise as the anticipation of discovering it for yourself. For example, when I was a youngster, I was standing in line for "The Empire Strikes Back" on opening day.

Opening day. let me repeat that.

As a kid, I was really, really excited to see the next Star Wars movie. Star Wars was the first movie I'd ever seen in a theater and I was soooooooo stoked to see the second one. Then the big old guy (old to me; he must have been in his late twenties) turned around and told our whole group the Darth Vader was Luke's father.

In an instant, all of that joyful expectation was gone. For years after that, ESB was my least favorite of the Star Wars trilogy because of that disappointment. Did the revelation of the twist make it a worse movie? No. The ruining of the surprise destroyed my enjoyment of it.

Oh and Soccer Mom--I disagree. The sound the woodchipper makes is MOST satisfying.

Like I've said before, I don't mind spoilers. It in no way ruins it for me, but I can understand the people who don't want them and wants to be surprised. I've looked at a couple of different Web sites, and each one says something different. I can't wait to get the book. I might be calling in sick on Monday myself.

Oh, and I would never, ever spoil it for anyone else if they didn't want to know. That's just wrong.

What a jerk to ruin Empire for you. It was such a big secret, the crew didn't even know. The guy in the Vader suit was given fake lines. (to be replaced by James Earl Jones later) The director told Mark Hamil on the day of shooting, so he would know how to act.

yeah, he was a jerk. These people spoiling Harry Potter online are a little bit more than jerks. They are thieves. *subdues self before the e-piracy rant starts up*

Love her or hate her, Rowling brought a whole generation of kids back to reading. The fact that someone thinks it's 'fun' to ruin an entire decade of speculation and interest on the parts of those kids is just plain cruel.

Hope he has a good lawyer though. I'm sure Rowling does. *grin*

I read somewhere that she begged her fans not to let spoilers escape so they wouldn't ruin it for others. I think she meant after the book comes out, and I think it's a shame it's happened beforehand. I love Rowling. She's my hero. It's not so much that I think she's a wonderful WRITER, but she is a wonderful storyteller. I think she's also wonderful at world building. I would love, and I think all of us would love, to write a book where most of the entire world is waiting to see what happens.

I absolutely agree. She IS a wonderful storyteller. What really impressed me when I first read HP (got the four book gift set for Christmas) was how well she corss-referenced things. something mentioned just briefly in book two turns out to be important in book four and so forth. It's very complicated and (so far) extremely well done. I also appreciate how well her characters age along with their readers. The progression through adolescence of the main characters is believable and mirrors almost exactly the teenage angst that was going on simultaneously in my house with my daughters.

Yes the world building and characterisation is amazing. I feel like I know them, that they are real. I was thinking the other morning that if we were peers, I would probably be in awe of Fred and George, and friends with Neville.

To be completely honest, I hesitated to even open this thread lest it contain anything spoilery! I'm glad to see a community of people who detest spoilers as much as I do.

Mind you, I quite like the "hints" - like ones J.K Rowling has given out herself. I think that heightens the anticipation.

But people who relish spoiling the book for others? Maybe not a woodchipper, but a complete ban from using the Internet ever again.... ;)

WHAT?! Darth Vader is... Luke's... ::Jo falls to her knees:: Noooooo!!!

Honestly, that's really mean. People like that should be shot.

LMAO! I think my initial reaction was, "Shut up man, you're full of crap."

That's what made everything so lousy later. I had to sit in the theatre and go, "The fat slob was right."

I can't espouse shooting anyone--I'm anti-gun. But the woodchipper? Now we're talking.

*evil grin*

Oh not me. I don't even want hints. When I KNOW I want to read/see something, Idon't want a descpription or trailor or anything. I want to be surprised. And I don't get that often becuase so often I need to see a movie trailor or read about a book to know if I want it. So books like this are a rare treat. As were books 4, 5 & 6. :D
