I'll put my current thoughts and ideas here, in a sort of a diary. You are free to comment.
I'll start with the big WTC subject. This terrorist act was a fascinating movie in itself, you can't deny it. I know it was evil, painful, traumatic. This war is still not over. The movie should be equally big. So far "World Trade Center" and "United 93" have been made. Firefighters who don't even enter the buildings and people on the last flight. No one of them in the center of the action. No insights into the motives of the terrorists.
The things which should be shown in such a movie include, in my opinion:
1. The hell itself, that is the "Towering Inferno" situation inside the towers, above the place where the plane hit.
2. The previous situation inside the towers, that is people preparing for work in big corporations, computers, views outside. I've heard that there was a videoconference between somewhere and WTC at this very moment and suddenly the screens in place A went blank. Everyone wonders what was inside the buildings. The towers when they were intact, with windowcleaners, morning routines.
3. I would avoid pathos, martyrdom, patriotism. It's difficult to see all those rich yuppies from 30 countries as national heroes.
4. I would choose one or two persons inside the two main planes as important characters, with flashbacks to their whole life and an exact description of their plans that day.
5. To avoid presenting the passengers as a homogenous mass. But this is also how you present the terrorists. They were not some Palestinians from the 1970s, but educated people with an intricate plan. I would show the plane simulator training process, Atta pretending to be a Saudi prince, their meetings with Bin Laden in Afghanistan, the camps there, their background, childhood, youth in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
6. I would show the process of planning the attacks by Bin Laden.
7. It should all be full of emotions, going deep and not a documentary, rather a football game.
8. I would avoid big politics there, because the targets were civilians, and the whole show was intended to be viewed by civilians around the world. So I wouldn't concentrate on the military, firefighters, presidents, but rather on the lack of protection against such aggression.
My aberrant idea here is the story of a suicidal man who decides to jump out of the windows in the WTC on September 11.
