I am waundering around my house, lost and sad. My 12 year old big yellow Lab died in my arms this morning at home. This was a dog who never met a stranger and never missed the opportunity to sniff a butt. He loved everyone and everyone loved him. He was very sick last weekend and we thought he was through, but he rallied and stayed for another week. Yesterday he stopped eating. Last night the only way I could get him to rest was to lie on the floor next to him. About 1:00 am, he staggered outside through the dog door and slumped on the grass. I left him alone, thinking he'd be gone by morning, but when I checked on him at 5:30, he was still here. I helped him back into the house, he took a drink of water, went to lay down in the dining room and never got up again. He died at in my arms 8:00 am. My heart is broken.

I'm very sorry.

Most of us here on the animal forum have been where you are now. Let us help you if we can. You might have to be sad, but you don't have to be alone.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss....I had a dog to make it to 18 and I still miss him terribly. Pets are members of the family too.

I am so sorry for you, Carlene. I want to assure you that he is going to be led across the Rainbow Bridge by so many great animals that I have known and loved.

I am smiling right now knowing that one of my very best friends I lost about 9 years ago will be wagging her soft black and white tail to greet your guy.

Take Care.

Carlene, you are so lucky that he waited to be in your arms.

He did that for you, you know.

He never stopped thinking about you, even in the very end.

That's how dogs are.

I know you know, but I want to say it too: "He was a good boy."

Oh, Carlene! I am so sorry to hear you have lost your baby! It pains me more to hear of a loss for animals than humans. I know that sounds cold hearted, but animals can't speak. It is only though their actions do they convey their feeling and what is in their heart.

You have peace in your heart because you spent his last hours with him and he had peace being with you. Lament his death, remember the good times and know there was love.

It's hard, there is something of ourselves that we give to our pets that we never share with people. Just be comforted by the thought that your love for your puppy isn't lost and that he was grateful every day of his life..

I'm so very sorry for your loss! I lost my "good boy" Rottie three months ago, and still get teary eyed over it. But memories of the wonderful times we had together brings on a smile and makes the loss a bit easier to bear. Take care now.

Thanks for all the kind words, gang. It really helps. Only people who really love animals get it. I got up this morning and started crying again. It was so quiet in my house! I still have my two girls and never realized how much noise Clarkie made. He was a heavy breather, rattled his tags, toenails on the kitchen floor - oh, tons of stuff. I am worried now because his twin, Molly isn't eating much. She knows he's gone - I think. I let both girls smell his body before we took him away. Well, she's 12 too, so it's only a matter of time. I am just taking it one day at a time.

Thanks again for taking time to comfort me.

I lost my cat of 17 years in April - and I still tear up when I see her picture or find a clump of hair hidden somewhere...

I found this bit of writing to be helpful - I hope it does the same for you.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Terribly sorry for your loss - but take comfort in knowing you gave your friend a long, happy, fun-filled life while he was here.

It's never easy when they go, not even when we expect it. They are such good and loving companions that it hurts mightily when we lose them. Don't forget to give the other fur kids extra attention - they feel loss too, and treat yourself well, too, during this time of mourning.
