Clueless...

I have just discovered this forum via Google and thought I might try to get some help here.

I sam setting up a marketing consultancy in Australia, specializing in the area of Strategic & Operational Planning Processes and Systems. The intention is (was?) to consult in person. In order to organize my thoughts and develop the material for the processes and systems I plan to offer, I ended up writing what amounts to a book.

And that is where the seed was planted. Perhaps I should do the book as oposed to the in-person/internet consultancy that I had originally intened (or perhaps additionally).

Having worked as a corporate Marketing Manager for over 20 years, I am confident that the solutions contained in the "book" will have a real and unique value proposition. It is not merely regurgitating what is already in other Marketing books. It is not theory as much as what happens in the real world of multi-national Fortune 500 companies. Not the stuff you can buy off the shelves (yet).

With that lengthy background I now need some guidance on what to do next. Without sounding over ambitious, I do believe that the value of the book will be equal regardless of country, language, industry sector etc. So I am looking at a best case scenario of ultimately having international distribution of the book.

The manuscript is about 50% complete and I am now starting to think about the next steps. And I am clueless...

Any directional help would be appreciated.

Your book idea sounds great, I love real world experience stuff as opposed to academic stuff. I also think the book could be a great promotional tool for your consulting business, so it'd be great to do both.

Have you read about the book proposal process? Most non-fiction books are sold on a proposal. Since your book is half finished that's great, it'll be easier to write the proposal, you'll already have several sample chapters, and there will be a lot less risk for the publisher.

Because you say you're clueless, I can recommend the book I'm using to learn the process. It's not the only book I'm using but it was the first and gives a lot of hand-holding. It's called "Shortest Distance Between You and a Published Book" here is the link to the amazon page http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0553061771/?tag=absolutewritedm-20

Once you understand the process, you can add read some more books about the proposal process. There is also a sample proposal and a good thread about this in this forum (see the sticky threads at the top).

Hi Andre,
Definitely read as much as you can about the publishing process, and how to write a solid book proposal. I am not familiar with the above-mentioned book so can't comment on its usefulness; however, Michael is correct that most non-fiction is sold on proposal.
One of the most important things to do before you start submitting is to research publishers. Find books that cover similar topics and check out those publishers. Learn what the publishers' submission guidelines are. If you want to go through an agent, research which agents focus on your genre. www.publishersmarketplace.com is a subscription-based site that offers a lot of information about publishers and agents. Agentquery.com is another good site that offers solid information about agents. Preditors and Editors is another. Do your homework first--it will save you time and trouble later.
Good luck!

Thank you both. Now, how do I find agents that specializes in Management/Marketing?
